Like many I was sceptical about the re-packaging of the REM Warners catalogue as DVDA and CD. The big dissapointment to me is the lack of a re-mastered standard CD version - you need a DVD-A compatible player to take advantage of the hi-res remastering. Nevertheless the 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS mixes can be played on a standard DVD player and let me just say they are superb! I'm not a huge fan of surround mixes but the mix on Green is a lesson in clarity. It really adds something to what is already an outstanding album and thankfully, the integrity of the recording has not been ruined by a load of random instrument placing and pointless sound panning. The mix just makes the sound more spatial and it's possible to hear much more information ... Read More:

This record has their most focused political songs taking up the first half of the album. Finest Work Song starts the record with the clarion call "the time to rise has been engaged / you're better best to rearrange". Welcome To The Occupation is a Chomsky style look at the United States economic occupation of South America "offering the educated, primitive and loyal / welcome to the occupation" . When Stipe sings of "Sugar cane and coffee cup, copper steel and cattle / an annotated history, the forest for the fire" it reminds me of school lessons looking at maps of the world where the western countries are labeled with their name and developing countries marked only by the product they provide to the western ... "Suspicion" is a good example of Rem's lack of judgement in handling the Up lp. The song is a beautifully dreamy ballad with a twilit murkiness reminiscent of "I dont sleep I dream" but in fairness there are far better singles on Up such as "Walk Unafraid" & "Hope". Also a hazard of ordering this cd is that you may not get a version with all of the advertised tracks on - I only got live versions of "Electrolite"& "Man on the Moon" (the former is pleasing although uninspired and the latter is blighted by indistinguishable vocals). This gets 3 stars because its by Rem but its only really for fanatics.

Debut albums don't get much better than this, and in REM's first offering it is easy to see why they became one of the biggest bands of our time. From the opening chords of Radio Free Europe, through the shimmering Rickenbackers of Talk About The Passion, the moody reflection of Perfect Circle and finishing up with the dramatic West Of The Fields, every second of this album is a joy to listen to. If you are new to REM's early albums then this is a must for you and if you are new to REM at all, then this is as good a place to start as any

The charts are now typically dominated by commercialised love songs written by commitees and performed with no emotional involvement at all so Rem's simplistic yet beautiful love song is wonderfully refreshing. Stipe's vocals are soulful yet pressingly sincere and the song is stripped down to a plinking piano and beach-boy backing harmonies to make a beautiful piece of pop craftsmanship. Not content with making one of the best love songs of recent years, the band have also blessed this cd with two great b-sides. Theres a lenghty live cover of Iggy Pop's "Passenger" which is indulgently jazzy and also a grippingly gritty live version of "Country Feedback". One of Rem's best recent singles.
