Music : Bach: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo
This is one of those recordings which transforms a work. I had struggled for years to like the Sonatas and Partitas, but a succession of recordings by great violinists had left me feeling thoroughly excluded by them. When I heard Rachel Podger, I suddenly saw the utter delight and involving beauty in the pieces. She loses absolutely none of their intellectual weight, but makes them dance, glow and sparkle. In the great Chaconne from the D minor Partita, for example, I had always previously reached the end feeling rather wrung out and exhausted with the effort of trying to penetrate a difficult and forbidding piece. With Podger’s recording I find myself engaged, carried along and very sorry when the final, breath-holding not dies away.

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

These are wonderful discs. Bach's sonatas for violin and cembalo are delightful, rewarding works, but can be hard to get into, in my experience. Previously I have had recordings by Elizabeth Wallfisch and Richard Tunnicliffe and by Fabio Biondi and Rinaldo Alessandrini - both world class duos, and fine performances in their way. However, I always had a sense with both of somehow working ones way rather ploddingly through the sonatas (most certainly not what I'd expect from Biondi!) and they had a slightly turgid, uninvolving feel to them.

Podger and Pinnock dispel this instantly. Rachel Podger's wonderful lightness of touch doesn't trivialise the music in any way but, as with her solo Bach, brings a sparkle and verve which light up the ... Read More:

The Telemann solo violin Fantasies deserve to be better known. There are twelve, each with three or four well-contrasted movements, all quite short. They exploit most of the capabilities of the baroque violin and are by turns haunting and invigorating, and always full of character. In particular Telemann has a way with soulful double stopping and athletic leaps from low notes to high or vice versa. Rachel Podger is just one of the best baroque soloists around. Everything she does here is characterful, the playing is totally assured and you really could not have a better guide to this music (though Andrew Manze on another label is just as good ; we are spoiled for choice).

an absolutely smashing set that, to a degree, puts to bed the theory that Vivaldi's La Stravaganza set of concertos wasn't as good as his earlier L'Estro Armonico - OK so admittedly it wasn't, but I'm not sure there's a L'Estro Armonico performance to match this new La Stravaganza for virtuosity, taste, refinement.

It's got the togetherness and sensible approach of a really good current British performer and director, with something of the elan of a good continental orchestra, with neither the over-aggressive catchiness of a Biondi nor the four-square rhythm of Hogwood or Pinnock on their vivaldian bad days.

This new recording is probably a bit better than the classic ASMF/Marriner La Stravaganza, but that's still a wonderful recording ... Read More:
