You can't dance to it, it isn't remotely cool and it's by a man in his sixties with a strained, nasally voice. And it's great.

After four decades of writing and releasing music - albeit with some extended intervals - this new album stands to be compared favourably with the best Newman has ever produced.

In songwriting terms, "genius" is a much overused and devalued expression, regularly applied these days to anyone who can muster three basic chords along with a grasp of kindergarten English. In reality, few songwriters can match Newman's genius: Bob Dylan and Tom Waits come to mind; beyond that you're already struggling.

If there's a criticism, it's that at 35 minutes it's far too short when he's clearly ... Read More:

This is a fabulous collection. If you can get it cheap its an essential purchase, even if you have got all his original albums. The range of music on offer here is amazing. The early tracks like 'Love Story' have a Phil Spector like feel to them. Big orchestral arrangements, contrast wonderfully with Newmans southern drawl and simple Piano parts. Later tracks perhaps, better show the true talent of this great songwriter. From beautiful ballads like 'I think its going to rain today' to various degrees of satire and wit (take your pick from many songs). Randy Newman wrote numerous hits for other people so 'Mama told me not to come' is better known as a Three Dog Night Hit. 'Simon Smith....' was a hit for Alan Price.

One of the most universally admired and critically acclaimed, multi-oscar-winning song-writers, this old-timer still has one hell of a lot to say. Randy Newman is one of those guys who writes songs straight from his cynical, sardonic, soleful heart with more than a hint of black-comedy. Laden with pathos and humour in equal measure, this album sounds like it was written by a 60 year-old with more than a life-time's worth of broken hearts and hate-mail, but lucky for us, he likes to sing about it.
Picking highlights from this excellent album is hard - the hillarious "Shame" and "I'm Dead But I Don't Know It"(about an ageing, out of date, singer-song writer who just won't shut up...) or the beautiful "Every Time It Rains" (possibly the sweetest lost ... Read More:

Newman's third studio album and his third great album (the live album having proved a little disappointing), this is one of the best of his collections for the beginner. Gone are the baroque orchestrations of his debut and the stripped down rawness of '12 Songs' - instead we have a collection of great songs, simply but sensitively arranged. And these songs are easily as good as his earlier ones, in fact many have claimed the title song as his greatest, whilst Newman himself has a special regard for 'God's Song'.
'Sail Away' opens the album and once again, Newman is speaking through another unsavoury character, this time a slave trader attempting to lure unsuspecting africans aboard his boat with visions of an America where 'every man is free'. The melody ... Read More:

"Good old boys" is Randy Newman's marvellous 1974 'concept' album about the American South, where Randy himself spent much of his childhood. It sounds fairly similar to his previous album "Sail away" and explores some of the same themes - racism, corrupt government, loneliness, the futility of human existence - but with specific reference to the South. He also instructs us in Southern history with references to Huey P. Long - "Every man a king" and the Mississippi floods of 1927 - "Louisiana 1927" (even more relevant today after Hurricane Katrina), and comments on modern race issues - "Rednecks".

If all this sounds a bit dry, don't worry it's not, the songs all have wonderful sing-along melodies and great settings. Newman obviously has great affection ... Read More:

Randy Newman of course never really had any hits in the UK. However this album from one of the best songwriters of the last 50 years really is something special. Not a compilation at all in fact, but complete re-recordings of some of his finest songs.

Recorded with vocal and grand Piano only this is exactly how you should hear any great songwriter, whether they are playing the Piano or not. The combination of voice and Piano is unbeatable for letting you hear the beauty of the music. Now of course Randy Newman is a very good pianist, but he's an even better songwriter who manages by some quirk of fate to be blessed with the ability to write tender love songs, as well as satirical and ironic tales on American society and the world in general.

Newman's astonishing first album was draped in baroque orchestrations and featured intriguingly structured songs. This, the follow up has a simpler pared down sound with Newman's piano and Ry Cooder's slide guitar the most prominent elements. The songs are closer to their blues and country models but lyrically they belong to the same twisted world as the earlier numbers.
The album kicks off innocuously enough with a comic tale of estrangement complete with RnB horns 'Have You Seen My Baby' but the next track cranks up the wierdness. 'Let's Burn Down The Cornfield' is a spookily beautiful tale of arson and sex with Cooder's guitar soaring over Newman's barely audible voice.
'Mama Told Me Not To Come' should be familiar to most listeners by now through one or other of the ... Read More:

Having recently enjoyed Randy Newman's latest album Harps and Angels I dug out this album originally released in 1988 . People more familiar with Newman's back catalogue will undoubtedly recommend others but Land Of Dreams is my favourite Randy Newman album. Thematically it mainly concentrates on his New Orleans childhood so it's his most personnel work though he still finds time to take acerbic side wipes at Rap music and capitalism .Mostly though Land Of Dreams is just great fun to listen to.
The album was produced by Mark Knopfler , Jeff Lynne and James Newton Howard with Lynne and Knopfler also playing on the album along with other luminaries like Tom Petty . The production has that varnished sheen redolent of the 1980,s so may be a touch too glossy for some tastes ... Read More:
