Andre Previn became famous as a jazz pianist while still in his late teens, and made some great albums with Shelley Manne and others. Then in the late 1960s he began to devote himself to classical music, and attained even greater fame as a conductor and as a classical pianist. This CD was made in 1989, when he was still busy with his conducting. He missed playing with jazz people, and wanted to return to his musical past. He hand-picked Joe Pass and Ray Brown to work with him for the first time. The result is a relaxed and swinging album.

This recording is a chance to hear 3 Jazz masters late in their careers. The Very Tall band is a reference to the album they recorded in 1962 as "Very Tall The Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson", which incidentally is a fabulous album.

So does this live up to the very high standards they set 36 years ago. Well the simple answer is no. The loss of the use of his left hand means that Oscar Peterson is no longer quite the powerhouse rhythm player that he was before the stroke.
