The first hit single in the U K by Ray Charles was Georgia on my mid in 1960 and this disc made No 24.Charles was on a new label by then and the Atlantic sides while issued here meant nothing until the Age of Merseybeat. Hit the road Jack went top 5 and it was nothing but up from then with the Modern Sounds of Country & Western spawning a number of hit singles. Ray's earlier work on Swingtime began apperaing on a label called Society. This CD is a pretty comprehensive overview of the most essential recordings which include his Beatles covers and ends with his version of Imagine. A superb collection of some of Mario Lanza's finest recordings. Considering some go back to 1949 - 1958, the recordings to CD are excellent. You'll never walk alone, sung as it was originally intended by the great Mario Lanza. A perfect collection for new comers or fans looking for the best of Mario Lanza. A track for every occassion.

Don't get me wrong this is a very good album. However some of the vocal tracks by Ray are rather strained vocally and to some extent like Sinatra was on his 2 "duet" albums he is outshone by his guests. This is particularly so on "It was a very good year" where Willie Nelson does most of the singing and overall the track is excellent. On other tracks Ray's vocals are less strained but didn't he always strain to such marvellous effect! The man still had so much "soul" even at the end of his life. Well worth buying.

What they don't mention is that a lot of these recordings have simply not been available to the public, but came from music publishers catalogues and CDs (the Bosworth discs are good). The source material is superb here, the quality fantastic... These are discs to be sought and savoured. They truly do not compose or perform music like this any more.

Ever since i was introduced to Classical music by my father at home and in music class at school i have appreciated the classics ability to soothe the mind, to be able to sink back and allow the mind to be massaged through the ears so as to be able to forget much of what troubles us, and Radio FM have again provided me with a beautiful continuity of music on these CDs to do just that. Gone is the need to turn the LP and for most of us we have the ability to place all the CDs in to a system and listen for hours on end, and with this set gone also is the need to skip tracks, each seems to flow naturally from the previous and merge nicely into the next, while the composers can take pride in their music, Radio FM can be proud of their management of all these pieces together. ... This album is classic Ray with lucsious strings and brass arrangements. Featuring that 'big band' sound that is synonymous with Basie and Ellington. In his very productive career Charles gradually progressed from playing in his own trio to adding brass and wind instruments and a backing vocal group dubbed 'the raelettes'. I would describe the love songs on this album as smooth and visceral (from the heart), the stand-out track for me being 'come rain or come shine'. A very special album from a very special artist.

this is a fantastic album i love it he makes the country songs sound fresh and amazing better then the originals i dont like country singers they write good songs but i find there voices bland and boreing ray charles was ahead of his time i love him R.I.P genius buy it its essential 60s album upthere with the beatles,dusty springfield,jimi hendrix,aretha franklin,etc ray the soulbrother no1!!
