Ray Lamontagne, is an enigma. His voice is breathy and rich and his trademark. His songwriting is brilliant at times. He is a genius at his craft. But, he is not reaching the masses. I found him, oh, several years ago with his first CD, 'Trouble' and his voice and lyrics stirred my soul. "The Jesus-bearded troubadour is sort of a recluse. I have only had this album for two days and it is already one of my favourites! Although I had heard of Ray Lamontagne, I had not heard any of his music and ordered this album from Amazon on a whim. Just pure beautiful music, very Damian Rice-esque, execpt more upbeat!!

I can understand why this type of music is not some people's cup of tea; this album isn't something you put on when you need a lift or cheering up. This is the type of music that you put on when you have just got home from a long days work and want to relax and chill out, open a nice bottle of red, or roll a doobie if that's your persuasion, lie back, close your eyes and allow yourself to be absorbed by the beautiful lyrics and voice of Mr Lamontagne. His voice is so unique and distinctive, almost mesmeric, I could sit for hours and listen to him sing the telephone directory. 5/5 Thanks for this Mr Lamontagne, the best album I have heard in a long long time.

Yep, Jolene is a belter, no doubt about that. But the cover version that Ray does of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy is outstanding. Just him and his guitar, putting a totally new spin and meaning to this already good tune. Some of the best, most heartfelt singing I have ever heard on record (well ok, cd).

First of all I would like to address the other review L.Nash has left. Leaving a three star review for an album of which he's heard only one song, which he said he liked, is unbelievable. I'm sure his intentions were good but when this album starts to get a lot of reviews, that three star clanger will drag the rating down. Thanks to one of Ray's websites I have heard six songs off the album and I can confirm that the man with the voice like a dusty cabinet is still in a rich vein of form. The track listing has now changed. Instead of Achin' All The Time we get the brilliant You Are The Best Thing. I've also heard Hey Me Hey Mama, Sarah, Winter Birds, Meg White and Let It Be Me. A great song that reminded me of some of the more upbeat Otis Redding songs (like Light my Candle), with a good bit of what sounds like a bontempi organ thrown in for good measure.
