Fans of The Shining will be well aware of the haunting music that plays out the final twist in the tale. Midnight and the Stars and you by the great Al Bowlly - once the most famous and most popular singer in the country. Most collections and there are many, seem to miss the sublime and unnerving brilliance of this track and opt for many of his more popular romantic numbers. I don't blame them, every song of Bowlly's was great - it's just that this one is something special. It's worth the cost of the record alone.

Band leader, composer and arranger Ray Noble directed hundreds of recordings in Britain in the early 1930s. Many featured the velvet-voiced, South African vocalist Al Bowlly. A starry array of instrumentalists participated: Nat Gonella was there, Freddy Gardner's saxophone is heard, and even the eminent oboist Leon Goossens appeared in the credits at some sessions. The recording quality was uniformly excellent. In the 1960s all the Ray Noble/Al Bowlly British recordings were reissued on LP and lively and insightful notes provided by Brian Rust.
