There's good news and there's good news. After 10 minutes of track 1, Lullaby, my one-month-old was fast asleep. As it played on, she continued to rest peacefully at a time when she would normally have been one alert little munchkin. And now for the other good news: This is a fantastic recording, and an important one for music lovers and musicologists. Having been recording in 1962/3, this sounds extraordinarily sophisticated (in a mellow, analogue "soothing" way). It sounds as if it could have been made today, and put out on Warp Records. Having purchased everything I can find that Raymond Scott has done, I had to get this too (I had to wait from May till nearly December for delivery, which is a long long long...) After all that, I must confess I'm a bit disappointed. It's a historically interesting concept blending rock n' roll with a symphony orchestra on classic songs. And Raymond's arrangement and the stereo production are wonderful. The problem is what he's done with the rock n' roll rhythm section - I was hoping for a driving, Rhythm n' Blues influenced sound, but it sounds more like the sort of cheap bontempi rhythms you might find backing a bargain basement Elvis impersonator.
