Hickox gives an extremely sensitive account of A Pastoral Symphony, which penetrates to the elegiac nature of music inspired by experiences of the First World War. The LSO plays exquisitely and soprano Rebecca Evans sings the wordless solos with a heavenly tone. A bonus of this CD is the first performance in generations of the Norfolk Rhapsody No 2, a beautifully tuneful follow-up to the first rhapsody which is also included here. This is some of the best English classical music ever composed and this is as fine a recording as you could wish for. I notice that Hickox/LSO's recording of Vaughn Williams Symphony No 4 is also available on Amazon and I highly recommend both CDs.

You really can't lose either way if you buy this box set. For those used to the EMI/DECCA recordings of the 60s it is a real treat to hear this new take on some old classics, and for collectors coming to this music for the first time, these discs immediately bring the wit and invention of this great partnership to life.

The musicianship of the soloists and orchestra are first rate on every disc [there are 5 of them]. You may consider the D'Oyly Carte recordings to be definitive because they were mainly recorded after a lengthy run of stage performances, but when you have Royal Opera House soloists being accompanied by a top class orchestra and chorus, you really can't go far wrong. Listen to Richard Suart as the Major General ... Read More:

It does take a while to get used to the English singing, but it also really helps to get the jokes across. I was splitting my sides when I first listened to it, there are some real gems in this translation (A prime example being in the middle of Susanna and Marcellina's duet as they exchange insults: 'Your quality/ Your quantity').

The conducting is wonderful, always taken at a brilliant pace by that great Mozartian David Parry. The cast are spot on, the only real exception being Yvonne Kenny's Countess (a good voice, just a bit too much vibrato here). I especially love Christopher Purves' Figaro, William Dazeley's Count, Jonathan Veira's Bartolo, John Graham Hall's Basilio and Sarah Tynan's Barbarina. Purves is perfect in his role; ... Read More:

Next to the 1959 Decca D'Oyly Carte recording of this early hit G&S operetta, this Mackerras version really represents the cream of the crop for all the currently available recordings of Pinafore.

Although this recording doesn't come with the dialogue, it offers a lot, and it does so in spades. Mackerras adopts bright, breezy tempi throughout, and his orchestra responds with peerless playing. There is precision and life in every bar, and you feel as if you can hear the felicitous nuances in Sullivan's orchestrations. It helps that Mackerras is blessed by a superb cast of soloists. There is bite, relish and caustic wit in Richard Suart's portrayal of the Ruler of the Queen's Navee. No grudges against his illustrious forbears John Reed ... Read More:
