This is the first time I have bought a REM Cd and so far, the tracks I have heard are great. Every song on this album is great.

Really enjoyed this fast-paced exhilerating album. It's actually the exactb album they promised after automatic but they gave us monster instead. Monster would be an interesting avant-guard sort of thing to be doing these days. Instead we get something so good we just don't deserve it. Unbelievably good and so reminiscent of lots of pre-green albums.

A beautiful record that I never tire of listening to. It has been with me a long time - my favourite record alongside Nirvana Unplugged - and has a terrific soothing quality.
The only thing I would question is the inclusion of "Ignoreland" which hints at their later political actions but does little to complement the album's mood of brooding but optimistic introspection.
Strangely, perhaps, I'm not a big fan of "Everybody Hurts" either. But the rest of the album is sheer brilliance, and more than the sum of its parts. "Sweetness Follows" and "Nightswimming" in particular are sublime.
The band would never be the same after Bill Berry left, witness his input into songs like "Find the River", probably my favourite track of all time.

This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

REM,s first album for a major label ( Warner Bros for who they signed a five album deal worth $10 million) was their sixth album and arguably the first that saw the band fall from the general standards of excellence they revelled in for their previous five albums on the IRS label. Coincidence? , probably, as under the terms if their contract with W.B. they were allowed complete artistic autonomy . Having pointed that out Green is still worth having in any collection as it does contain some tremendous tracks .
Released on the 7th November in 1988 , one day before the 88 presidential election , the recording of Green marked a significant shift in the groups recording methods. This was a conscious decision by the group ( no doubt with the compliance of producer ... Read More:

If you came to REM post 'Out Of Time' as I did and then collected all the albums to the present date, it was only natural that you would then investigate their earlier 'IRS' work. If this is the cream of that crop then I'm not impressed. It's weedy, jangly, student-friendly 'alternative' fodder and *very* different to the REM of today. There are many who cite this earlier incarnation as being the best version of the band but I suspect such people are merely looking back on their youth through rose-tinted spectacles. Would they really find this music special if they were exposed to it for the first time in their 40s? I very much doubt it. Yes there are a few good tunes on here (Don't Go Back To Rockville, The One I Love, Finest Worksong) but so many pathetic, snivelling and downright ... Read More:

For me Document is the album that really propelled REM to the mega -stardom stadium embracing apex of their career. Good luck to them , they deserved it. Rarely is brilliance produced at the level this band had produced over five albums and rewarded with album sales to match.
So Document released in 1987 was their fifth studio album , coming after the odds and sods collection "Dead Letter Office". Its the first of a highly productive partnership with Scott Litt and the bands last album for the independent IRS label. Document is an album that very much rang the changes for REM.
What's also very noticeable , especially if you've been engaging in a lot of retrospective REM listening is how the music on Document has surrendered the inchoate tones of their previous albums ... Read More:

With producers Don Dixon & Mitch Easter, R.E.M. captured their sound which sounded like a collision of then uncelebrated acts like The Byrds & The Velvet Underground. 'Murmur', which was a critical favourite at the time, remains a classic debut recording - the chemistry between Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills & Michael Stipe is fantastic. Standout tracks include 'Perfect Circle' (which predicts later songs like 'Nightswimming' & 'Find the River'), 'Pilgrimage', southern-gothic-closer'West of the Fields', the tight-acoustic shiver that is 'Sitting Still' & the Byrdsian-'Talk About the Passion'...

'Murmur' more than stands up these days, and forms part of a trilogy of R.E.M. albums with 'Reckoning' (1984) & 'Fables of the Reconstruction of the Fables' ... Read More:

When REM returned to the studio in April 1986 to record their fourth album - the follow up to the tepidly received "Fables Of The Reconstruction (The I.R.S. Years Vintage)" they were determined to put the rather gloomy experience of recording that particular album behind them .In other words they wanted to revel in the process and i would say that it is fair to surmise that judging by the results they succeeded.
History would come to judge Fables rather more favourably but Lifes Rich Pageant ( named after an Inspector Clouseau saying in the 1964 film "A Shot in the Dark [1964]" according to Peter Buck) was pretty rapturously received on it's arrival and listening to it again recently it's not hard to understand why. Released in July 1986 and clocking in at around a snappy 38 minutes it's arguably ... Read More:

I still have vivid memories of the disgust I felt when I put this album on my stereo for the first time. My only prior experience of their vast catalog was Automatic for the People and Out of Time (with AFTP being perhaps my favourite album at that time - perhaps it still is, but I digress), so this disc was a complete shock to me. Its big, fat, distorted bass sounds, jarring, overdriven electric guitar and "treated" vocals were at least a million miles away from the stripped down acoustic perfection of AFTP.
When I spoke with my friends about it, I was unable to put into words just how much I hated everything about the record. However, after a few more listenings, I found that Strange Currencies appeared to have some redeeming qualities... Crush with Eyeliner followed... then Star 69, Circus Envy and ... Read More:
