As a kid I had the cassette recordings of the 2nd & 5th symphonies recorded in 1983. They are mind blowing. For me, absoloutely the most incredible interpretations from Solti and the Chicago Symphony. Also the engineering on these recordings is far superior to any other set. The concerto is very appealing and full of melodic grace, while wistful in its sonorities. It's beautifully performed here. Why is such a lovely piece not better known - i.e not performed more often? One would have thought there are soloists out there crying out to give it a go, especially when the inspiration is so consistently high. It's not glitzy or virtuosic, just expertly written, memorable and satisfying. Bruch wrote much more than that pesky G minor violin concerto. Try the second symphony on Phillips, conducted by Masur: sonorous, Brahmsian stuff (without the long-windedness!)

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again. Don Giovanni in your living room! Better than this is hard to imagine. Blu ray and opera, the perfect combination! People are speechless when they see and hear the quality we can now enjoy in our homes. We are so much nearer the artistic achievement which here leaves nothing to be desired!

This tenderly beautiful recording is one of the very few occasions on which Karajan showed his humanity. He conducts with a rare warmth and sincerity, and has a perfect cast. Peter Schreier is particularly characterful as David. Strongly recommended, and a fantastic bargain in its new 'Great Recordings of the Century' packaging.

Since buying this recording some months ago I have played it to death. Whilst not sharing the religious faith which drove Bach to produce it I find it intensely uplifting and joyous. Partly the way Bach did it, partly the way this ensemble reproduces it. I know nothing about the technicalities of what goes into producing such a brilliant sound, but this recording just sparkles. The final chorale "Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen" is simply sublime. Bach got particularly good value out of this tune - heard in various other guises in his work ("O sacred head sore wounded) but who cares? Doesn't do to think too hard about the sentiments either ("now are thou all avenged") but as the recording is in German most of us won't have to do so.
