Music : The Myths and Legends of King Arthur
Rick Wakeman was the first person to really get me into synthesisers. Mainly that fat Mini-Moog sound, but also his writing style and lightning keyboard chops also attracted me. I blame him for me becoming a keyboard technician for over 20 years...

Rick's work has often been labelled pretentious, particularly the concept album which I think is rather unfair, and I see no reason to give an album an all-over theme rather than a disconnected bunch of tracks. His first two albums were competent, but a little youthful, but with 'Arthur', he came into his own. The combination of rock band, awesome keyboards and a full orchestra and choir are something most modern artists would shy away from for the technical complexity, let alone the ... Read More:

An EXCELLENT album - the sound quality is astounding! the cd is a big improvement in sound quality compared to vinyl (for a change!). My favourite track, ANNE OF CLEVES, is a masterpiece. Crystal clear recording, Rick's keyboards and Alan White's drums come literally crashing out of the speakers, definitely one to get you moving! In fact this whole album would rank alongside any Yes album. Very highly recommended, an essential addition for any Yes/Classical/Prog Rock fan.

I was at the live recording of this album ( I love prog rock.. ELP, Yes Crimson , etc.). As the concert developed I thought that is was so bad that it would be received in near silence by the audience. I was amazed by the audience as it was clapped and cheered to the rafters. No further comment needed.
PS. Try the band Greenslade

Rick Wakeman's interest in music began at an early age and it was originally thought that a career as a classical pianist lay in store for Rick and a spell at the Royal College of Music would seem to support this theory. Unfortunately Rick preferred playing in bands and appearing on the lucrative session circuit than studying as a classical pianist and decided to leave the Royal College Of Music or was perhaps gently pushed in that direction depending on who's story you believe.
Whatever the facts one thing is certain Rick Wakeman was in heavy demand playing sessions for some of the biggest names in pop music at this time (Late sixties/early seventies) and as such played on many hit singles including records by Brotherhood Of Man, Cat Stevens, ... Read More:

Excerpts from these three masterpieces make up the first half of this collection, and serve to tease. Taken out of their concept album context, for me they somehow lose their impact. (Perhaps I'm over familiar with the originals.)

The second half of the set, made up of excerpts from arguably less successful projects, including "White Rock" and "Criminal Records" actually sounds better. No less keyboard pyrotechnics, and some excellent back up on bass and drums from his mates in Yes, Chris Squire and Alan White. Then to finish a short rhapsodic piece on solo piano ("The Palais") that stops just as you realise how good it is.

Overall, a good introduction to Rick Wakeman's most prolific musical period, but it may leave you wanting the full versions ... Read More:

i have had this cd for over a year now and have not had the chance to listen to it due to other commitments. finally the big day arrives and....what an immense disappointment.after the initial anticipation of another "journey" , i found that by music track 2 i had lost all interest in the album , so boring , except for patrick stewarts narration , the music and the songs were. This is surely not the utter rubbish that the best keyboard player in the worls has found himself now churning out . this album should be played to insomniacs to help them sleep. By track 8 i was beginning to lose the will to live. Please rick never again
