This album is groundbreaking on many levels. This is mainly down to the first "track", the heavenly music corporation, which is almost palimpsest-like, in that the reverse and slow speed incarnations are both here (there are explainations given as to why..chortle away at the history), and its the same piece of music...yet it sounds different enough to warrant inclusion.

Being a composer/producer, I noticed a sizeable difference in the audio quality of this master compared to the previous incarnation of the album. Everything is crisper, and more punchier, WITHOUT losing the ambient remit which this album perhaps inadvertantly ended up setting (eno's truer ambient works started later). Swastika girls is more raucous and simmery/ ... Read More:

As released back in 1979 this album made nonsense of the idea that prog and new wave were incompatible. Not everyone was listening, unfortunately, but for those of us who got the point, it was immediately mind-opening. So it's a real treat to finally get to hear the whole thing.

This album is startling, beautiful, seductive, abrasive, funny, deadly serious and more. Short fragments of songs burst into taped conversations (and vice versa), heavy guitar riffage-mania is juxtaposed with drones, gorgeous frippertronics and vocals which are at times crooned while at others sound spat or throttled.

The newly released Daryl Hall material is thrilling, particularly his version of "Disengage" which - pitch black as it is - puts the song ... Read More:

I first heard one of the title tracks on Late Junction about 2 months ago (surely the best music programme on radio!)and immediately put it on my Christmas wishlist. Christmas Day - I was not disappointed!! It works as pure ambient whilst at the same time merits closing off the rest of the world and just sitting and listening. The music raises a couple of questions for me. Firstly, is this entirely the product of synthesised and looped guitar with no added keyboards?? If so - how does Mr Fripp's Solar Voyager work? Secondly - how do I get to hear of RF's live performances BEFORE they happen. Oh to see him live!! (Surely one of my 50 things to do before...the end of time.)

No, not B-Thong or Roger Eno, but the early 90s Fripp-Sylvian collaborations re-issued and re-engineered for another generation. And not before time.

'Damage' (rightfully the title track) is, without doubt, my favourite song of all time: a lingering, aching, remorseful piece of percussive-less balladry. Fripp's red-grey sky of an electronica backdrop hangs evocatively in the air, punctuated by Sylvian's tremulous vocals and some judiciously restrained bass courtesy of Trey Gunn. The sense of loss is overwhelming, but somehow there is hope in the void. The respectful pause-before-applause at the end says it all... less is truly more. All this and the only slightly less wondrous 'First Day' too.

On the original boxed CD these gentle, translucent songs ... Read More:

Sometimes I don't understand Amazon reviewers at all. This compilation contains a remastered version of the 'No Pussyfooting' album in its entirety, plus several other tracks, and is far cheaper. Yet while this compilation languishes in the 2.5-star rating zone, the almost unobtainable 'No Pussyfooting' is rated at 4.5 stars or more.

What is going on? Is it a matter of this CD's physical package, which admittedly is both unattractive and uninformative? Or is it the sheer rarity of 'No Pussyfooting' on CD?

On its initial release as an LP, 'No Pussyfooting' was priced at £1.30 when most albums, such as Roxy's 'For Your Pleasure', cost twice that. I think EG Records knew they were going to have problems persuading hard-pressed teenagers to buy this songless, ... Read More:

A beautiful album, and a great introduction for anybody new to Fripp's Soundscapes.

Most of the Soundscapes CDs present material from one particular time, tour or even show. Although all of these pieces are "live in the USA" they span a number of years, and demonstrate a great variety in approach and feel.

Easter Sunday has soloing of the type that fans of Fripp's more traditional guitar work will recognise, but mostly it's the sublime and atmospheric looped synthesiser tones that many of us find addictive. There's even a bit of vocoder on Love Cannot Bear which tickles me (because I can't help thinking of Mr Blue Sky) and moves me at the same time.

Give it a try - you might never look back!

The liner notes explain Robert Fripp's frame of mind as he made these recordings: he was exploring and expressing the emotions and the meanings which he was dealing with following the death of his mother. He transforms personal grief into a work of aching beauty. Whatever you think about his other music, this is a remarkably moving collection of soundscapes, made with just guitar and electronics producing ethereal and other-worldly sounds yet connecting powerfully with the heart. This is an astonishing one-off and a marvellous thing to own.
