When is the world going to wake up to the genius of Rodney Crowell. The title alludes to his former life as a main stream country artist who began to look inwards, a track on The Outsider may be the key, and produced The Houston Kid. He laments on The Outsider that he will never write like Dylan, but his last four albums are, in my view, and I am a big Dylan fan, far superior to the last three lauded Dylan albums in every respect. This is an artist at the peak of his powers, using well honed techniques to produce works of emotional maturity backed by a group of wonderful musicians. I have played this album constantly and it just gets better and better, but if you listen to Wandering Boy from The Houston Kid, you will buy the last four albums ... Read More:

This is an absolute steal: At 19 tracks it contains the best of Crowell's Warner years at the beginning of his solo career. The compilers also understood how much of a superior debut "I Ain't Living Long Like This" really was, something Crowell couldn't follow up without a noticeable dip in quality. This classic debut album is here in its entirety, albeit in different sequencing, followed by hand-selected five tracks each of the two more patchy follow ups which makes them seem better than they were. Most of these songs were made famous by others like Emmylou Harris, Bob Seger and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but Crowell's rendition of his own classics should be in any serious collection of country rock.

I had heard Rodney Crowell's voice many times and knew he had been married to Roseanne Cash. I didn't know what an extraordinary writer he was. The combination of his voice, lyrics and music on this CD is remarkable. The story of part of his life is exposed in great music. To listen is to love the entire CD- not one song is out of place-not one song is the song of the album. They all add up to one glorious piece of work.
Rodney Crowell is a master and this is his masterpiece! prisrob

Rodney Crowell Fates Right Hand

Rodney Crowell is one of America's least heralded music icons, a Grammy winner who has avoided the limelight and allowed his music and talent to speak for itself. The many hundreds of artists who have recorded Rodney Crowell songs, from the Grateful Dead to Andy Williams, would readily attest to the quality of his song writing.
Rodney Crowell has been writing and performing since the early 1970's when he got his big break as the rhythm guitarist in Emmy Lou Harris's band. His career has remained intertwined with that of Emmy Lou, although he has also collaborated with many other famous names, which includes producing five albums for Rosanne Cash.

Rodney has achieved considerable success as a musician, songwriter and record producer but his determination to do things his way has resulted in a patchy career as a performer - not because any of his albums are anything but brilliant, but because they rarely appeal to mainstream fans. Nevertheless, Rodney showed via this album that he could appeal to the masses. It was by far his most commercially successful album, yielding five number one hits on the American country charts.

The big hits were Above and beyond (a cover of an old Harlan Howard song that originally provided Buck Owens with a major country hit), It's such a small world (a duet with then-wife Rosanne Cash), I couldn't leave you if I tried, She's crazy for leaving and the ... Read More:
