After the unbelievably woeful 'Radio Kaos', Waters returned in 1992 with this masterpiece, which (IMHO) is undoubtedly the best solo album by any member of Pink Floyd - even better than David Gilmour's eponymous debut!

With this album Roger rediscovered his bite, and offered a great collection of songs relating to televised war ('Perfect Sense' featuring an awesome vocal performance from P.P. Arnold, 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range'), Tianmen Square ('Watching TV', accompanied on vocals by Don Henley), imperfection ('Too Much Rope'), and the decaying of western society (the album's title track). My personal highlight is 'Three Wishes', which includes eviscerating guitar work from Jeff Beck.

That being said, the ... Read More:

Undoubtedly the worst album with any connection to the Pink Floyd name. The fact that Waters did not draw from material on this album for his 'In the Flesh' tour, or his subsequent DSOTM tours, speaks volumes about the depths to which his musical output had sunk at this point in time. If he had stayed on with Pink Floyd then it is quite likely that the band would have eventually released this turgid material, thus sullying their great name.

Synth horns, at times excruciating backing vocals ('Powers that be'), and a typical 1980s production sound help to make the already feeble pop songs on this album unlistenable. To compound matters, the album concept and corresponding lyrical content are asinine.

Thankfully Waters resurrected ... Read More:

Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads is the accepted benchmark for filmed concerts. That might be more energetic and cinematic, but this is almost as good. It's very well filmed. The editing is slow enough to let us see the instruments being played, but not too slow that it becomes boring for the eyes to watch. Also there are no special effects to distract the viewer/camera operators so it plays a lot better for home viewing.

Musically the two hours of Pink Floyd songs sound great. It might annoy some that the female backing vocals are so loud and extensive, but I liked them (except on Shine On You Crazy Diamond). I like that the DVD favours the vocals over the music so the lyrics can really be heard without any difficulty. Also there are English ... Read More:

Most of this album is plain bonkers, some of it unlistenable. But if you're a hardcore Floyd fan, worth a purchase for the final track on the album 'Give Birth To A Smile' - featuring an uncredited Pink Floyd, and its a little corker.

Before I go on, I would like to point out that I don't get paid to write what follows ;)
My technical and personal knowledge suggests me to say that this album is an immense masterpiece, dense of emotions and shining in full amazement. Technically speaking this album is amazing, there's harmony between the scores (written by Roger Waters) and the performance of the whole choir and orchestra.
Obviously I wouldn't suggest to purchase this album to Roger Waters fans that only listen to the "rock" side of his music productions, but for any open minded and hearted listeners I really recommend this album.
What has always been a complete distinction of Roger Waters from the other big artists out there is the amount of feeling and passion that he expresses ... Read More:

I paid more for this record than either of Waters’ other release, both of which are infinitely better than this. Yes, that fact does irritate me greatly. Regardless, I’m trying to stop you from making the same mistake that I did. Here we have many of Waters’ prime lyrical concerns in fine form... cultural alienation, social dislocation, nuclear war, Margaret Thatcher and so on. The problem is there’s no real emotion. If you’re expecting a record that scales the emotional highs of the Wall or the Final Cut (and to a lesser extent the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking) then this one definitely isn’t it.

Here our man Rog spins a yarn about a paraplegic mute Welsh boy named Billy, who following the arrest of his older brother - who was ... Read More:

9.Flickering Flame: The Solo Years, Vol. 1 by: Roger Waters
April 30, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Flickering Flame: The Solo Years, Vol. 1
Initially only released in Australia as a promo for RWs tour at that time, Flickering Flame burns brightest with track 8 'Each small candle' (from 'in the flesh live', 2000). Set in Kosovo, the song is about a Serbian soldier breaking ranks to help an Albanian 'babushka' grandmother. Musically its beautiful and lyrically very strong.

'Towers of faith' from the 1986 film 'when the wind blows' and 'flickering flame' are also good. The rest of the album is a bit hit and miss with tracks from 'Amused to death', 'Radio Kaos', 'Pros and Cons' and a couple more film tracks. Strange mix, as although the 'amused to death' tracks are good, perhaps the best from this amazing album (with the fantastic Jeff Beck) are not featured... plus the fact that Radio Kaos is just not very good. ... For let me begin by saying that this is a very good double album. The sound quality is great, Roger's voice holds up pretty well and the backing vocalists chosen provide some beautiful harmonies.

Musically, the highlights for me are Dogs, Welcome to the Machine and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Hardly ever heard live, all three are performed superbly. Dogs is at the top of the pile in that respect - I just love it. The stuff from Animals was never performed live by Waters' former associates and that was always a pity.

Unfortunately for the three musical highlights, we also have Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Comfortably Numb and Another Brick in the Wall dragging the CD back down to Earth. Don't get me wrong, the first two in particular are two of my ... Read More:
