.........but that's not Roy Fox's fault. While the selection of tunes may be good enough (although some appeared on Vocalion and ASV Living Era well before this reissue and one wonders why they have been included), the slapdash way of handling the material is shameful and the titles were certainly NOT digitally enhanced. The material was transferred one to one from old LPs with their regular 33 RPM ticks very clearly audible. There are no composer credits, no background info and worst of all, no recording dates. I should advise the nostalgia quarterly Memory Lane, which I was given to understand has nothing to do with these reissues, to take action against Pegasus for having their name associated with this kind of rubbish.
Bah!!

To date, this is the third of the four volumes of Roy Fox recordings reissued by Vocalion, and if you have to make a choice this is the one to go for. The first sixteen tracks were recorded during the period of his Monseigneur Restaurant residency, when the lead trumpeter was Nat Gonella (who sings the classic "Georgia On My Mind"), and the featured vocalist was that doyen of thirties crooners, Al Bowlly. The latter sings on no fewer than fourteen tracks, sharing vocal honours in some cases, most notably on those two reefer songs, "Minnie The Moocher" and "Kicking The Gong Around". This was a classic band, and its class shows in every bar. Without looking a gift horse in the mouth I wish that the whole disc had been devoted to it, but the remaining ... Read More:

Want to know what Roy Fox was all about? Then this compilation is for you.
It is a very good selection spanning the whole pre-war career from 1931 to the band's demise in mid 1938. Nine titles containing most of the band's hits from 1931-1932, when the band featured Nat Gonella and Al Bowlly; eight titles are from the Decca years 1933-1935 and eight are from the 1936-1938 HMV period. Although Fox's whispering cornet is a bit shaky and thin, the rest of the band is very good, both as a show band and as a jazz outfit sporting great section work. The sound quality of the old Deccas isn't too great, but gets better after 1932. All the vocalists (Bowlly, Gonella, Peggy Dell, Sid Buckman, Mary Lee, Barry Gray and Denny Dennis) are accorded one or more ... Read More:

Bob Francis, author of the liner notes to this cd calls this a super selection and I fully agree. The choice of tunes is very good, the arrangements, with faultless execution, show off the Roy Fox band to great advantage. The jazzier tunes benefit greatly of a very good rhythm section which provides an effortless drive that eluded most other British bands of the time (listen to "Whispering"; the remake by the Pasadena Roof Orchestra of some forty years later doesn't come within miles of the original!). The ballads are very well done too with rich reed scoring, making very effective use of Art Christmas's baritone saxophone. Unfortunately every now and then traces of Mickey Mouse music seem to be impossible to suppress as in "The Touch of Your Lips" and ... Read More:

The first Roy Fox cd certainly wet my apetite for more, so when this cd appeared in 2000 I waisted no time in ordering it. But unfortunately, as with the third Roy Fox cd, I was surprised by the unususally large amount of pop trivia it contains. And althought the better bands (amongst which I count Roy Fox) were generally able to make most unpalatable inanities halfway bearable, the Fox crew here seldom rises to the occasion. E.g. take Sid Buckman's poor version of "I Saw Stars" (while Buckman normally is a very fair singer); the clippety-clop rhythm under "What a Difference a Day Made"; the almost palm-court like treatment of "All I Do Is Dream of You" (now here's no competitor for Ray Noble's treatment of the same song!); the insipidly sentimental brass ...
