The budget price doesn't reflect the quality of this 2 disc collection of classical music highlights, for the soloists, orchestras, conductors and the recordings themselves ensure it is a good quality selection of mostly familiar music from the classical music repertoire. The choices lean heavily towards the opera style, so for that reason alone will not be the only album necessary to cover everyone's taste - even the complete classical beginner will find many of their familiar favourites are absent. The tracks are mostly single movements from the whole score, which may not please the more enthusiastic classical fan, but it's unavoidable given the short time permitted by only 2 CDs. The tracks on this cd are excellent and well worth the money. I get worried about the packaging of this sort of disc though because it reminds me of Tesco's attempt to sell wine to the masses by renaming a mediocre chablis as 'Good with meat' or whatever. If this was called 'Fine Opera' or 'An Opera Sampler' then I'd be a lot happier but the dumb approach of 'The Only Opera Album You'll Ever Need' makes me cringe. Once again though: the music is very good and the performances are excellent on the whole.

Simply a marvellous performance and recording of Tchaikovsky's (slightly neglected) Manfred Symphony. The R.L.P.O play marvellously, with particularly characterful woodwinds, and Petrenko delivers a performance that has all the excitement of a live performance. The great melody in the strings in the final movement is delivered with a terrific sweep; this is a truly committed performance, and is very well recorded (much better than most record companies get in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall). At this price it's an absolute bargain. Tchaikovsky lovers don't hesitate!

whoever wrote the 'whats on this cd' blurb mislead me to buy this item - I needed the WHOLE of the Messiah AND THE WHOLE of Faure's Requiem and reading this blurb you think you have it - but guess what - there are only extracts - the titles given are just for the whole work - not the individual piece of music - so I cannot learn the pieces for two concerts I am performing in before Christmas off this - very misleading. Sorry - but it is not the only album Ill ever need.

I had seen many of the performances in this set recommended separately so to have them all together in one set at such a low price is great. The sound is very good and even if you only like half the music on these CDs, this is still a fantastic bargain.

I have given some time to this box set and found the orchestral playing to be foursquare and the conducting not particularly inspired. How on earth anyone can pretend to compare these to Rattle's wonderful (more expensive) VPO set is beyond me. The sound is pretty good in Liverpool and Manchester studios/concert halls. Like Mackerras' Haydn on Telarc, this does nothing to me, despite its popularity. His Mozart symphonies on Telarc, and Handel etc are wonderful, but this Beethoven is dull and obvious, to my ears. Sorry. Instead I recommend the following for the budget concious: Hogwood (nice budget slimline reissue set) - sensible affectionate performances, about the best of authentic, esp for the price Karajan ... I bought this recording because my son, a student at Durham, was in the cathedral for the first live performance and rated it highly. I was a Deep Purple fan in my youth, too! The first time I listened to the concerto all the way through I was left feeling slightly 'flat', as other reviewers have commented, but I have listened to it quite a few times now and love it more and more. I was going to say that 'From Prebends Bridge' is my favourite movement but I went and checked the CD and decided I'd be hard pushed to chose one track above the others. Listen to them all - more than once - and see what you think!

OK, the recording is 1959, OK, It's ADD, not DDD, OK, the trend is now towards the baroque band and choirs of aorund 20 and not the massed musical forces north of Watford, OK, the choir comes from 'Udderfield and the orchestra from Liverpewel and not from trendy London. Yes I know all that. BUT This, for me is THE definitive recording of Handel's Messiah and THE one to own. It's got the great outsized Victorian tradition wall to wall, it's got the pre Christmas concert sentiment as standard, at no extra cost an' it's got the G(u)oosto of t'best choral society-EVER. And yet despite all that warm cosy sentiment, it has the intelligent caring musical direction of the one and only Malcolm Srgent who studied music at Cambridge and was one of the great conductors of the 20th ...
