Just take a listen, it doesn't matter what you're in to, just listen.

It's relaxing and melodic while being completely passionate and beautiful. How anyone could ban this stuff is beyond me. Damn politics!

if a cat took human form, joined the IWW and went on the road, this is what his songbook would sound like. i'm guessing ry cooder didn't vote for dubya? - not with songs like "j edgar" he didn't. it's poignant, edgy, funny, cutting, satirical, and shows signs of cajun, appalachian, and malian influences. it's a real tour de force from a master of re-invention and pioneer of non-mainstream music. loved it.

A beautiful mixture of music from Mali, the most recognisable African music, and the superb guitar of Ry Cooder.
If you only listen to one track try track 5, Amandrai.
Put a do not disturb sign on your door, Turn off the lights, sit back and be smothered in the lovely slow and smooth playing.
Any music lover cannot fail to enjoy it. Also try Niafunke and The River also by Ali Faka Toure

Is this, I wonder, the greatest filmscore ever made? Well, if it isn't, it must come close.

It is impossible to imagine Wim Wenders' film without the sparse, haunting, melancholy wail of Ry Cooder's guitar, the soundtrack being an integral part of the action (if the film can really be considered to have much in the way of action). It is as difficult to imagine "Paris, Texas" without Cooder's music as it is to imagine the shower scene in "Psycho" without Bernard Herrman's staccato strings but, whereas Herrman's score works only with the film, the music on "Paris, Texas" makes for a raw and wonderful listening experience on its own.

Brilliant laid back slide guitar blues, highlight is Willie Browns song, note that this does NOT contain the guitar duel from the end of the film...

This is the most essential of a list of essential Ry Cooder albums. If you only ever buy one of his CDs, make it this one.

I wore the vinyl out and had to buy it again and then I had to buy the CD. Someone borrowed the CD, they moved and I never got it back so I had to buy it again.

The playing is immaculate, it is simply wonderful music. The Mexican influences are great and really bring an extra dimension. This is the culmination of everything RC did before and overshadows everything he has done since.

Buy this album.

I was always on the lookout for a definitive Ry Cooder Album - one that captures the essence of his style. This record is just that. Great production, evocative, it takes you from the everglades to downtown New Orleans whilst passing through Texas on the way. A beautiful journey that has to be experienced in a particular mood. It is, in short, the perfect complement to Bop till you drop. Some of the songs are a little indulgent but so is a bottle of fine red wine. A must for anyone into slide guitar and the possibilities.

I "borrowed" this LP off my father when I was in my late teens, he coming from the perspective of being a big Jazz fan, whilst I was worshipping at the altar of NWOBHM and Angus and his family/mates. I loved this record from the first time I heard it, and as ageing has spread my musical tastes as fast as my belly, I have a reasonable collection of blues music. Somehow though Ry Cooder is missing, and mostly because everything I listen to never quite sets me off the way this record did, and still does. Whilst BB and John Lee ploughed a pretty straight furrow over the years, Cooder seems to have followed every hedge and every tree in the field; and this album is the farmhouse: big, homely, and brings a smile every time you pull up the driveway.

I came back to this album recently, not having heard in more than 30 years and was so pleased. It doesn't age, it's superb with such effortless singing, playing and downright funkiness etched right in.

Do yourself a favour and add it to your collection.
