Listening to Sandy Denny's voice makes you realise how much the music industry short-changes us these days. Sublime and unaffected, young yet embedded with wisdom, it sweeps you away like none of today's wannabes ever will. 'Sandy' also benefits from first class arrangements, production and musicianship, with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick adding valuable guitar and violin respectively. Sneaky Pete contributes some of his best pedal steel playing too, lending a country tinge to some of the tracks. By and large, this is folk at the edge of rock. 'It'll Take A Long Time' is an expansive, epic opening, while Denny's take on 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' is one of the best Dylan covers you'll hear.

There are many breathtaking passages, ... Read More:

Even the much-maligned (by me) 'bonus tracks' on 'TNSGATR' are good. Unforced. Segueing with the album proper so you don't see the join. With no hint of that desperate lets-cram-any-old-garbage on, and watch the fans cream themselves at the very notion of 'previously unreleased'- there's usually a good reason why things are `unreleased....'
The album itself perfection. Soulful, powerful, lyrical, in fact everything you could want from a music, regardless of your preferences or bias. This level of haunting beauty has `broad' appeal.
Denny sings like a Guinnessed-up chorister. Her voice, (inspiration to every-one from Stevie Nicks to the criminally under-rated Gay Woods {!}) is sharp and worldly. You can sense her vibrancy as a person from ... Read More:

I was persuaded by previous reviews to buy this set. It is literally monotonous - a nice-ish voice but all on one note. There is no depth or colour to it and the only emotion it demonstrates is depression. Also the arrangements are plodding and overblown. That s right, I really didn t like it.

This album is a distilled version of 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' and as such is fantastic value for money as an intro to Sandy Denny, but be warned, the 3 disc box set 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' is The Definitive (capitals deliberate) collection of her best work and you'd be better off spending the extra money on that.

Don't be deterred by the rather dreary black and white photo of Sandy Denny on the cover - this album is full of top quality, often quite beautiful, music from one of Britain's most distinctive and memorable female singers. Though the album is described as 'an introduction to Sandy Denny', this seems too modest; 'very best of' would not be an inappropriate title. It features around four tracks from each of her four solo albums, which were recorded between 1971and 1977, in the years after leaving the influential folk-rock group Fairport Convention. Every track is of high quality, with crystal clear remastered sound, and the collection succeeds in picking much of the best material from these solo albums.Although on some tracks the music is typical of the well-loved Island Records ... This was Sandy Denny's third solo-album. On her second album, the much acclaimed "Sandy", she had begun a slow departure from her folk-music roots. On this album you probably would not have thought of there being any folk-roots at all, if it had not been for her backing band consisting of people with strong roots in Britsih folk-rock - people like Richard Thompson, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, Jerry Donahue, Gerry Conway, Pat Donaldson and several more.

Sandy and her husband/producer Trevor Lucas were seeking a broader approach with a wider range of styles, using heavier production; often with use of strings; which some people thought a progress, and other people hated.

The opener, the gorgeous "Solo" is one of Sandy's very best songs ( I would buy the album ... Read More:

Although I've only given this 3 Stars it is an excellent product but the fact remains that the recording quality of some of it is such that it sounds as if it was recorded off the radio (and the medium wave at that) rather than for it. One for all Sandy Denny afficionados but not those unfamiliar with her work.

It is disappointing to read that some of the guitars and vocals have been overdubbed and that the original order of songs has been changed. I didn't know this but could tell that something wasn't quite right.

However, it doesn't spoil the beauty of this performance. Sandy Denny had such a deeply haunting voice that had such an empathy with what she sang about, it has to be heard to be believed.

Highlights for me on this are two of her own compositions; John the Gun and The Northstar Grassman and the Ravens. The former had never particularly floated my boat on the album version, but here it totally rocks. Check out the progression of the rythm section, the only problem is that the song stops too soon!

The North Star Grassman......is a fantastically mysterious, beautiful ... Read More:
