I come to this album in reverse, ie, i started with The Drift, then i got Tilt and then one of the many 'Best of' Scott Walker compilations that seem to be around (but have nothing of Climate of the Hunter onwards for reasons i can't figure... i've listened to a fare few songs from each other the other albums too... and now i have this.

Honestly i'm not sure what to make of this album, it has some great moments, some really good songs and some nice structures to the songs that keep them different from one another...

BUT i have two niggles
1) some of the songs aren't given enough room, they are over way way to quickly and you can't bask in the whole splendor of it, a lot of these songs are only 2 minutes. I respect ... Read More:

If your coming to this album with The Walker Brothers Or Scott's early solo music ringing in your ears, forget them! This is the other side of the coin. Tilt is experimental and very very avant garde. Its also quite chilling. Sit in darkness on your own listening to this album and I deify you not to be half scared to death!

After two fine albums, mainly of outside material, Scott Walker puts his faith in his own songs. The first ten tracks are self-penned, while for the last three, he dips again into the Brel songbook. As ever, the orchestra-backed arrangements are superb, as is The Voice, and his lyricism is peerless (on Scott 4, his ambition would lead him over the top). 'It's Raining Today', which opens the album, is a superb, reflective ballad of dramatic pauses and hard-hitting melody. Indeed, of his own songs, only two are of a noticeably different style. 'We Came Through' is taken at a stirring tempo, while '30 Century Man' is the work of the cool troubadour in shades, the one obviously modern track. Individually, his other songs are fine efforts. The only problem is that, ... Read More:

I just never get tired of listening to this. Completely addictive. At first it seems unbearably dark, even after Tilt, but the humour slowly emerges. To quote the first song "You could easily picture it in the current top ten". Er...not really, and just as well. A picturesque nightmare.

There's a certain and very warm feeling which runs through you when you hear any one of The Walker Brothers hits from the 60's. Maybe it was the orchestration, or the BIG production, but it was their trademark, like how your ears immediately prick up when you hear the trumpet right at the beginning of 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and you get goosebumps all over. Their voices and the backing just have that effect, and the girls' at school used to swoon over them as if they were The Beatles. They toured a great deal and played Bournemouth Winter Gardens with Jimi Hendrix on the same bill, and that's how I happened to see them back in their hey-day. There isn't a bad track on here, but those old singles just take the edge over the other tracks.

On 'Scott 2', the artist visits his past, present and future. 'Jackie' opens the album in the present, his fixation with Brel's songs. This is my favourite of his Brel covers, a track that gallops through a maelstrom of biting witticisms. This is followed by his Walker Brothers past, the commercial ballad, 'Best Of Both Worlds'. The future is represented by his own material, notably the epic 'Plastic Palace People', which incorporates both his smooth and cryptic sides. It's one of his best songs outside the brilliant 'Scott 4'.

He has three other self-penned songs on this album and they vary in quality. 'The Amorous Humphrey Plugg' is more mundane than the title suggests and suffers from an overdone slow vibrato. Both 'The Girls From The Streets' and 'The ... Read More:

At under £4.00 this has to be the bargain of the year if not the century.
Scott Walker does a great job of interpreting Jacques Brel's songs - my only complaint is that there are not enough of them.
I love all of the tracks some of which have been covered by other artists such as David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Dusty Springfield & Judy Collins all of whom have done a great job.
However this is the only English language compilation that I know of.
Scott may not have the soul of Jacques but this is a good effort and well worth the money.

I heard my first track from 'Scott' in 1967 when I was 17. He sang on 'The Billy Cotton Band Show', a bizarre choice for the LP's premiere; NME at the time thought so too, describing variety programme'Band Show' as having a "luvverly bunch of coconuts" atmosphere to it and here was Scott Walker singing 'My Death'. Over 40 years ago and I still remember it vividly. I sat alone in the family home,a Lancashire terrace, lights off (we did that in those days, don't ask me why) as I watched the telly. Scott looked almost ready to run for his life. He was always a nervous performer and his hands shook very visibly. At the time I his horror of public exposure wasn't so well-known so I thought then that the shaking hands were due to the overwhelming emotion of singing that song. Maybe it was ... Read More:

Scott Walker showed his contempt for the eighties by releasing just half-an-hour of music during the entire decade in the form of this album. A largely textural work, the difficulty in distinguishing between the songs was accentuated by half the tracks being given no real title.
However, fans of ambient music or those not bothered by structure will enjoy the album and while it was certainly a more admirable direction than other artists (say, McCartney) were taking at the time, it was nowhere near the genius of his late-sixties work or the tight nineties masterpiece 'Tilt'; the drifty nature of 'Climate Of Hunter' makes it an ideal album to wake up to (or perhaps stay asleep to) and it remains a unique moment as there would be further years of silence when Eno missed out on producing ... SCOTT 4 has always been over-rated and Walker's finest album is probably SCOTT 2, it certainly was his biggest commercial success in the 60's, but I've always thought this album (his 5th) to be his most under-rated. THANK YOU FOR CHICAGO MR. JAMES is a lost gem. And his version of STORMY astonishing. There are some standards which we could have done without (especially WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? - better done elsewhere) but the title track and WAR IS OVER are very fine indeed. The real jewel however is not sung by Walker himself but by Esther Ofarim: LONG ABOUT NOW. A haunting, melancholic masterpiece that stays in your head for years and is beautifully sung by a singer, frankly, I know nothing about. LITTLE THINGS cropped up on the original vinyl version of SCOTT WALKER SINGS JACQUES BREL ... Read More:
