Such is Classic FM's marketing team's enthusiasm for releasing these 'Music For' compilation albums we should soon have a CD in our collection to cover every eventuality in our lives!

This one is for dinner parties - although being a single CD it may need to be played several times depending on how quickly your guests eat - and the intention is to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere with perhaps an air of sophistication to those social events.

There should be something on this album to please everyone round the dinner table. Satie's 'Trois Gymnopedies' is soothing and familiar, Haydn's 'Cello Concerto no. 2' is more lively and Handel's 'Water Music' adds a bit of ceremony to the event.

Bryn is one of our living treasures, a man with a wonderful voice, great diction and fantastic musicality. However he is *not* a tenor! He is a baritone, hence he doesn't get to sing the arias we associate with Placido Domingo and other tenors. It also means that he got to sing Wotan, wonderfully, rather than Seigfried / Seigmund.

Ever since i was introduced to Classical music by my father at home and in music class at school i have appreciated the classics ability to soothe the mind, to be able to sink back and allow the mind to be massaged through the ears so as to be able to forget much of what troubles us, and Radio FM have again provided me with a beautiful continuity of music on these CDs to do just that. Gone is the need to turn the LP and for most of us we have the ability to place all the CDs in to a system and listen for hours on end, and with this set gone also is the need to skip tracks, each seems to flow naturally from the previous and merge nicely into the next, while the composers can take pride in their music, Radio FM can be proud of their management of all ... Music : Classic FM Music for Driving

The `Classic FM Music For' series of CDs, released during 2004 to 2005, aims to provide classical music to suit a variety of moods and occasions, including music for Babies, Bath time, Christmas, Dinner Parties, Driving, Fitness, Romance, Mums, Studying and Weddings.

This collection of well chosen short pieces, intended to be played while driving, is more of a cross section of classical music's most popular hits (they will be familiar to most non-classical fans) than a good listening accompaniment for driving - musical taste will surely dictate the most suitable music for that.

Some of the albums in the series are appropriate for the occasion, but this one is simply a very good selection of classical music suitable for ... Read More:

Every year at this time Classic FM bring out a new triple CD set - and this year's is even better than the ones that have come before. I didn't think they'd be able to better "Time to Relax", which was last year's album - but they have! And they've done it in some style too by choosing music from their evening programme "Smooth Classics at Seven", which is presented by the legendary John Brunning. I can't recommend this album enough. And it does just what it says on the box. I've got my copy in the car at the moment - it's perfect as an antidote to a journey from Hull to Manchester on the M62 every morning. I'm seriously considering ordering two more copies - one for the office and one for home - the music choice really is that good. This is excellent ... Read More:

I have the complete set of Brahms with this orchestra and conductor. At first glance this would seem irresistible: Mackerras separates the violins to left and right, uses a small orchestra of the size that Brahms himself favoured, and he makes the important exposition repeat in the symphony (and in the others in the series). But things aren't as good as they should be: there is a superficiality here, I feel that we don't get to the heart of this immensely inspired music, and while Mackerras is quite right in saying that Brahms would vary the basic pace of movements, rather than rigidly keeping in time, the speed changes here sound calculated rather than natural. So this is an excellent buy, as long as you have a more (dare I say it) traditional reading ... Read More:

While I agree that everyone is likely to have their own opinion, admirers of Peter Maxwell Davies should not be put off by the above review. While many may prefer Max's more radical works, this collection has much to recommend it. Undoubtedly these works are simpler (and dare I say it, more accessible) than much of his other work, but they are varied, often moving (I defy anyone not to be moved by 'Lullaby for Lucy') and rewarding. I doubt that someone who enjoys listening to the Eight Songs for a Mad King - an important piece, but surely one of the most inaccessible British works of the last forty years, and one that few listeners would turn to for pure enjoyment - would necessarily 'get' what Max is doing in these smaller pieces, but others may enjoy ... This CD is great for anybody who is a baroque fan, and it is excellent for any students studying the baroque period for A Level or GCSE. Some pieces have been shortenened such as 'Dance of the Blessed Spirits' but overall it is fantastic to listen to, and suitable for any music lover.
