An engaging introduction into the compelling music of the man who, in his own lifetime, was regarded as a French national institution: Serge Gainsbourg. This compilation provides a broad and chronological overview of his career; it begins in 1958 with the jazzy strains of 'Le Poinconneur Des Lillas and concludes, 22 tracks and 32 years later, with his gentle, unhurried duet with Catherine Deneuve 'Dieu Fumeur De Havanes' from 1980. Crammed in between are three decades worth of tracks in a multitude of musical styles, including: pop, jazz, rock, reggae and disco. Initials SG shows that Gainsbourg, at his best, had poise ('Initials BB) and passion (UK No.1 'Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus') in equal measures.

Serge Gainsbourg's L' Histoire de Melody Nelson is a 28-minute concept album that fuses elements of rock, funk, cabaret and lounge-jazz, with more subdued moments of poetry, atmosphere and orchestration. As a record, it pretty much sticks closely to Gainsbourg's key-themes, such as drunken debauchery, feckless seduction, and soul-destroying lust, with the singer managing to convey some truly heartfelt and heart-breaking moments of deep emotion within that intoxicating haze of excess, caricature and over-indulgence. This was the first Gainsbourg cd I bought, and I was hooked from the opening bars of "Requiem pour un con" and have since built up my collection. If you like 60's/70's pop, this should be amongst your collection. Every song on this disc is a classic piece of French pop music to be inspired by. Forget all the stories about the drink and women...just listen to this album and be converted.

This was the first Gainsbourg cd I bought, and I was hooked from the opening bars of "Requiem pour un con" and have since built up my collection. If you like 60's/70's pop, this should be amongst your collection. Every song on this disc is a classic piece of French pop music to be inspired by. It's a great album. Unfortunately, the production and the session players that gave Melody Nelson its soul aren't here. It sounds very cold. I guess it's hard to better perfection. Don't get me wrong... If you love 'Melody' you'll love it, but wish you'd heard this first...

Serge's final studio outing, prior to his tragic implosion. This is an extraordinary record which should sit alongside his other major works: "Melody Nelson" and "L'Homme à Tete de Chou". A strikingly modern recording, at the time, which has aged very well. Very sharp and funky backing musicians, plus some of SG's overtly rudest lyrics. This is an album which oozes with sexual debauchery, and suggests that Serge was heading right off the rails. (Or had already done so.) Two particular stand-out tracks for me. "Gloomy Sunday" is, in its own way, incredibly moving and so totally convincing. And there's "Mon Legionnaire", which is a rework of an old Piaf song.
