Please, Please buy this. This is a masterwork of genius. Never have I heard someone with such a deep understanding of what music should be. Jorge is a adpetly at home in so many styles. "America do Norte" and "Trabalhador" are both nods to the influence of North American percussion, both styles fitted effortless into the Jorge plan - sprightly, melodic - this man can make a violin sound funky. "Burguesinha" is a beautiful pop-samba - Jorge's understanding of the transecendent chanted chorus in evidence. This track will have you humming along, tapping your toes. My favourite track is the show-stoppingly brilliant "Mina do Condominio" - the way the lyrics just patter around the passionate chorus with that beautiful mandolin - one of the great ... Read More:

Have to agree with the other reviewer on this page. Magazines like Straight No Chaser and tastemakers like Gilles Peterson have done an excellent job of opening up contemporary Brazilian music. Artists like Seu Jorge and Ed Motta are working with an obvious knowledge of and sensitivity to Bossa and Samba, but like Azymuth, Milton Nascimento, Marcos Valle and many more before them, incorporating a great range of styles and influences.

This is not Seu Jorge's most famous album. Most people in Britain are probably more familiar with his work on the Life Aquatic soundtrack and his latest solo album Cru (2005). Carolina isn't as accoustic and folky as the Bowie covers used on Wes Anderson's film. He is much readier to use funk ... Read More:

From the first notes of the cavaquinho on "Tive Razao," you may realize there's a lot more to Seu Jorge, than the whispered vintage Bowie tunes he sang in "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" soundtrack, and by the time you hear his version of "Chatterton" -Serge Gainsbourg's song- you'll be convinced that the breadth of this guy's music is remarkable.

Although, Jorge's arrival in the Brazilian popular music scene is rather recent -discovered, you may say, for his role in 2002's City of God- and this is only his second album, the material included here already shows a singular and mature voice, at ease with honoring Bossa tradition -"Fiore De La Citta" and "Una Mujer"- as well as mixing new sounds -"Bem Querer" ... In an understated voice, Seu Jorge opens this concert promising that the main connection tonight is with the audience. The tone is humble, but not sentimental ... and then he announces "1967, Farofa Carioca"--the name his first band, years before Bowie & Zissou made him a star--and their song, Sao Gonca, propels his voice to show an extraordinary emotional range, nothing expected from his introductory words.

The gorgueos bossa of Problema Social follows, and Jorge again hits the measured intimacy the lyrics ask for--"If I could tweak my fate/I would be not a boy selling lemons/working at the street fair all day/to earn his bread ... If I could I would not be a social problem." The first half of this album is pure Seu Jorge, even more real and immersed ... Read More:
