Well I have to admit I had completely lost the Silver Jews before earlier this year when I saw them put in a magisterial performance at the Primaverasound Festival in Barcelona. Much of the set comprised of this record. And what a record it is. Somewhere between Kinky Friedman and Nick Cave, David Berman takes his place amongst the pantheon of inspired lyricists. Every song on this record has something going for it. It is one of those great efforts that rewards you with repeated listenings. The lyrics are picturesque and witty, the melodies are beautiful and the overall execution is nigh on perfect. Its the ultimate modern country record. It manages the rare balance of being incredibly smart whilst still amazingly soulful. This is one record ... Read More:

This was my first time hearing the silver jews. After knowing of them for some time (through the familiar 'pavement' link) I asked for a couple of their CD's for xmas - this was the first one i heard - what a pleasant surpise it was.

I understand that they are not so upbeat as on this album but 'Punks in the beerlight' is an excellent alt-rock song! a nice up tempo number with some good guitar work and a catchy chorus to boot.

I also got the album Bright Flight - which in comparison is a stronger album with some excellent songs. Although it does have a much stronger country - roots leaning than Tanglewood Numbers.

If you are rock, alt, 'emo', lo-fi fan who liked Pavement, but is possibly put off by the ... Read More:

Im new to the SJ's - xams 2006 new! got this and 'tanglewood numbers' for xmas - both very good albums.

There are enough reviews here on amazon to inform you about Warren Berman and how fantastic his lyrics are - yes they are good, quite poetical - lots of references to water on this album. - havent really looked into that anymore - just something I noticed whilst listening to it.

I'll just say that if you are looking for something more sombre and paeceful then this is the better of the 2.

Dont be put off by the fact this is alt/country 'tagged'. It is a slower pace than tanglewood numbers which more upbeat with more guitar.

Howevr, this is not cheesy dolly parton or billy ray cyrus territory, ... Read More:

5.Natural Bridge by: Silver Jews
October 20, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Natural Bridge
Genius is often mis-used but The Silver Jews' David Berman is a worthy holder of the title. From the outset the Natural Bridge has a staggering lyrical charm, like talking directly to an American settler drunk on rum. The complexity of the lyrics throw forward weird imagery like a campire spitting strange shadows over familiar ground, and the simple strumming guitars and bounding bassline compliment this lyrical style perfectly.

For fans of Sparklehorse, Pavement, Grandaddy, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Whiskeytown.

This album has everything u want from a joos record and berman always makes song writing sound so easy.
Impossible to pick a favourite of his albums as all would get 5 stars from me but only going to write the one review so buy yourself a joos album and go see them if he is skint and touring.
Check out this album if u are new to dave bermans songs and hang out with your friends listening to 'people'. Put on 'honk if you're lonely' and 'wild kindness' if you're a jews fan and need faith that good music is still around despite not being played on the radio.. but hey put on any joos record and all is right
