Unfortunately, Simple Minds tend to be remembered mainly for a couple of hits, Don't You & Alive & Kicking which kind of misses the (their) point.

Simple Minds came along at the same time as U2 &, for my money at least, were the more "cutting edge" of the two.....up until 1983, New Gold Dream at least.

This collection has the early stuff in abundance, The American, Theme For Great Cities, I Travel yet the absence of New Gold Dream is mystifying.

They made BIG music; pumping, driving, futuristic, Euro-synth dance music & they made it well.

Waterfront virtually confirms the assertion of the time that they were almost too big for stadia yet also proved to be just past the pinnacle ... Read More:

Best tracks: "Big Sleep", "Glittering Prize", "Somebody Up There Likes You", "Hunter and the Hunted", "Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel"...the whole album!

New Gold Dream is my favourite ever album and the culmination of everything Simple Minds (and post-punk pop music in general) was heading towards, probably without realising it at the time. After all, this is an album that is lyrically built around the idea of the looking to the future, of possibilities, of dreams, of anticipation, of being on the cusp of greatness, the idea of "belief as a beauty thing". It's an album that was about seeing the peak in the distance and not the experience of actually reaching the summit, yet with hindsight, it really ... Read More:

I honestly had to laugh after reading some of the reviews of this album, the word cynical is quite frankly inaccurate. A greatest Hits LP is quite simply a greatest hits LP and all the hits in this collection are the bands most successful and well known songs, any real fans of the band would be happy with this album, infact it could and probably has generated new fans hence its charts success(rememder it kept Madonna of the no1 spot). Lets face it any band who has 2o years of music to pick from isnt going to pick the lesser known unsuccessful tracks for their first compilation this is not cynical just common sense.

Okay, so a few years later they blew it (largely due to Mick McNeil leaving the band and depriving them of the musical alchemy shared between himself and Mr.Burchill) but at this time in their career, Simple Minds had reached their peak. I disagree with anyone who slags this album off for being too "big" or "pompous". Yes it was, but so were Queen and so can U2 be, but isn't that why people love them???
I'm not taking anything away from the earlier albums "Life In Day", etc , "Sons and Fascination" had some great ideas and, arguable "New Gold Dream" is more subtle and mysterious and "Sparkle..." a some cracking tunes, but "Once Upon A Time" had greater ambitions and wanted to take this one step further.
Jimmy Iovine was an excellent choice of ... Read More:

These two albums are the band's best, the refinement of their unique talent to its best pitch before succumbing to the commercialism of'New Gold Dream'.The latter may have been more polished, but can't compete with the spartan elegance of these two. From Sons and Fascination 'Love song' and 'Sweat in bullet' were singles, but only these, 'Seeing out the angel', and 'In Trance as Mission' are the really great tracks. I prefer Sister Feelings Call. The American was this album's single and is more tuneful than the previously mentioned two singles;the intrumental version of 70 Cities is superior to the vocal one on'Sons'; Theme for great Cities is a sweeping ambient classic;League of Nations is the group at their best: ambient, abstract, rhythmical; and Wonderful in ... What to say about this album? Every song is a corker and the performance and production are superb. I bought this for the singles but found myself loving every single song. A masterpiece.

Certainly a return to some sort of form after the string of lack luster albums from 1995 onwards! Again a shortfall of only 9 tracks, but there is no real weak tracks this time round. It's all about the music for me, and this it better sounding music with a lot less of the doggy sounds found on the awful Neon Lights or Cry. Track 2 and single Home sounds great even now, and secondly single Stranger is catchy. The only real weak moments of any note are the plodding re cooked Jeweller to the Stairs from Our Secrets are the Same, and the thudding keyboards of Different World, which can't make up which direction it wants to go in, but isn't a bad track all the same.

They still suffer from not having a variety of style's and a good strong 12 track album. It always ... Read More:

Whatever Simple Minds will be remembered for it will always be The Stadium Rock years from 1984 to 1989 was there finest years and it gathered them success in America for a brief period, but this album for me was the peak of there stadium rock years, and the peroid when they tried to be The Scottish U2. The opener Up On The catwalk is a brilliant Start to the album opening with Mel Gaynor's thundering Drums it sets the mood of the whole album, the next track is the brilliant Book of Brilliant Things which includes more synthesisers than most Simple Minds tracks and sets the mood for album. The next song is the wonderful single Speed Your Love, my personal favourite from the album which is followed by the equally brilliant Waterfront which is the closest Simple Minds ever got to sounding ... Best tracks: "I Travel", "Capital City", "This Fear of Gods", "Celebrate".

The third Simple Minds is another overlooked wonder, a million miles away from the bluster and pomp of their later years and a dazzling synthesis of electronic dance and avant-garde experimentation. As different to Reel to Reel Cacophony as that album was to Life in a Day, this sees the band remake-remodel themselves as Europhile clubbers with a taste for 'tragedies, luxuries, statues, parks and galleries', taking in Bowie, Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder along the way. Opening song "I Travel" establishes this new direction splendidly, all driving rhythms and a terrific chorus that was more or less rehashed for their hit single "Ghostdancing" five years later. The sparse, hypnotic "Celebrate", ... Read More:

Simple Minds were never as popular as bands like U2 or Bon Jovi because of there musical direction, Street Fighting Years moves away from there Stadium Rock/New Wave roots and on to something different. This album won't feature Rockin anthems like off once Upon a Time or even Pop Hooks like New Gold Dream, this album is very political and it shows on most of the album. The Title Track 'Street Fighting Years' is a haunting and beautiful way to start the album, while Soul Crying out is a very similar track in my eyes and both songs are very equal in class. The next song is probably the loudest song on the album the rockin 'Wall of Love' is one of the albums finest moments and it differs from the first 2 tracks and from the next track The Brilliant 'This is Your Land' which features vocals from the band's hero(Lou Reed)another ...
