I caught a snatch of the Hebridean Symphony on Radio 3 composer of the week, and ordered this CD as I was captivated by the music I heard. What some sublime music, why is he so neglected? I find his harmonies an amalgam of Elgar and Richard Strauss and yet also so individual. He was played quite a lot early in the 20th centuary but then quite disappeared from the repetoire. Thanks to Hyperion and Chandos for giving us a chance to hear his music.

I was pleased to find this cd as just a few weeks ago i performed Diversions on a Bass Theme and Rhapsody for Brass in a concert. I have to say that i wasn't at all disappointed with the recording as it is such a good quality. Grimethorpe band were at the top of their game at the time this was recorded and i enjoyed listeneing to the pieces again. These particular pieces are indeed just 2 of the great brass band contesting pieces and i would recommend a keen brass player to get a hold of this cd!!

A vital purchase for all music lovers, and not just from this country. Bantock's neglect in the concert hall (and, indeed, on disc) is decisively shown to be wholly unjustified. In addition to large works like the symphonies and choral pieces, there are many small, occasional works - overtures, ballads, etc - which could easily be programmed alongside Tchaikovsky, Strauss, or other late romantics.

I mention those famous names, because they are the people Bantock most closely resembles (imitates), though without the hysteria or egotism of either. His music is always melodic and never less than pleasing, but much is superb, even outstanding. The massive song-cycle Sappho is glorious, maybe unprecedented. The sea music pieces also convey ... 10.The Reed of Pan - British Works for Flute, Vol.3 from: ASV

Music : The Reed of Pan - British Works for Flute, Vol.3
This is not easy litening but it is worthwhile litening. Unless you are a 20th C British Flute music boff (and probably therefore a flautist!) you may not have even heard of most of the works on this CD or the composers with the exception of Lloyd Webber, made famous by his sons and Finzi whoes son appears in Hillary and Jakie as Hillary's husband !

Back to the music. Very British, very pastoral but beautifully and delicately interpreted by Kennet Smith with skillfully blended with Paul Rhodes on piano.

For me the highlight 'Five Bagatelles' by Gerald Finzi. Originally written for clarinet I believe but they seem to work very well for the flute as arranged by Kenneth Smith and I would love the score of the arrangement.
