Bought this disc on the back of a rave review from one of the Sunday papers (Times, I think) but have been rather disappointed. the soloists are fine but the choral and orchestral parts sound thin and anaemic to me. I'm going to look for a more 'traditional' version like the Colin Davis perhaps. I'm untutored in music but this version seems to lack conviction, which is what I think Messiah needs. Maybe a more knowledgeable person would like this but it doesn't stir me (or it appears, the performers)the way I think The Messiah should.

I came through this CD in the town where the Te Deum was first in 1734, just by chance. I am portuguese so you might consider my opinion a bit biased, but trust me you won't be deceived. It is always nice to see less well known composers being interpreted, specially whose work miraculously survived the Earthquake of 1755, which had devastating consequences on one of Europe's most important collections of music scores, that of king John IV of Portugal. As a layman and great admirer of baroque music I would say that it does resonate some Italian influences. This is Handel's first oratorio written during his stay at the Duke of Chandos home The Cannons during the years 1717 -1719, at which time Handel also composed the Chandos Anthems and the masque Acis and Galatea. Esther shares melodic similarities with both the Chandos Anthems and with the masque Acis, and as far as how the solo and choral parts are treated. This performance is very dramatically excuted and at the same time is intimate in scale. As Christopher says in the liner notes it was performed in a church in the round with the placing of the microphones in the middle and the chorus at the conductor's back to create this intimacy. The soloists Nancy Argenta, and Michael Chance are excellent, and Michael George as Haman is superb. ... Read More:
