This recording has a major problem. It is on the one hand technically perfect; the instrumental soloists have everything in the right place, accents, etc, and the singers keep the rhythm flowing in a rather lush and seemless way, paying extreme attention to accent and rhythic flow. All the same this interpretation seems emotionally eviscerated to me. It's like a finely built brick house all the masonary extremely well detailed and measured and balanced and well proportioned but failing to be real ARCHITECTURE, in this case failing as emotionally involved music. Or it's like a finely wrought suit that has no style. This recording has it seems been acclaimed for its technical perfection and its emotional dullness has been overlooked. Gramophone ... This collection includes most of the greatest masterpieces of this wonderful composer from the last century. There's clearly a Frenchness about the idiom, and it's possible to draw the usual Stravinskian references to Satie, Ravel, Mozart, Piaf and God-knows what, but what strikes the listener more than anything is how unmistakeable the style actually is - it's so Poulenc, every little gesture. Another interesting thing to note is that Poulenc, like Webern, was a master of the short piece. In our soundbite age this must make this music more comprehensible.
