Without words Explosions in The Sky manage to take you on incredibly lyrical and emotive journeys. This loud band from Austin Texas have always done this, have been smothered in critical praise for doing so, but are now doing it better than ever before. With merely guitars, bass, drums and a little piano, the symphonic majesty of their compositions feel like the odyssey of a great culture hero passing through an ordeal that promises rewards as great as salvation itself. This is a very different type of album from the cowboy Christmas album by Michael Martin Murphey. Although both have an upbeat feel, this one is much more relaxing. The other thing to note is that while this album is rooted in western music, it is just as likely to appeal to fans of traditional country. The group like to yodel, so if you don't like that, give this a miss. Another feature of this album is the inclusion of an accordion - an instrument more commonly associated with cajun music than with western or country music. i hope that i can convince readers to take a gamble on this debut album from brutal metalcore upstarts beneath the sky who hail from ohio as this is surely one of the first great albums of 2007. On the badge which is stuck to the cd cover it says 'for fans of aqs i lay dting,trivium and lamb of god' and that was all i needed to buy it to be truthful,a gamble well spent perhaps but not for the reasons that the record label insist,in truth beneath the sky are more for fans of zao,underoath and as i lay dying for they release heavy riffage with limited death vocals and screams that come from the textbook of zaos vocalist daniel,and they also share the trait of being a christian band like zao as well but thats never a reason not to buy a cd.
