Music : All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone [VINYL]
Without words Explosions in The Sky manage to take you on incredibly lyrical and emotive journeys. This loud band from Austin Texas have always done this, have been smothered in critical praise for doing so, but are now doing it better than ever before. With merely guitars, bass, drums and a little piano, the symphonic majesty of their compositions feel like the odyssey of a great culture hero passing through an ordeal that promises rewards as great as salvation itself. Homer would surely have considered it a fine accompaniment to his epic tale. They tell us that it usually takes them months to compose even a single track, and after a few years work, even an album of a mere six songs is ample reward for all their conscientious efforts. I can't explain just how enduring this collection is. I have it on a tape I bought as a ten year old on a market stall in the early 1980s - and it still amazes me how vibrant and elevating the musical arrangements are. The group use a very enlivening mixture of classical instuments with modern touches such as synth very successfully. The Bach Fantasy and Fantasia are really joyful pieces building to thrilling ends, and To Yelasto Pedi is a cracking Greek folk foot tapper. Berlioz's March to the Scaffold and Ride of the Wagner's Valkyrie are both great accumulating tunes where the anticipation grows, and for a contemplative mood there is the beautiful Skylark. I can totally recommend this.

Music : Big Sky Vol.1 - the Source
This album is beautifully produced, and the musicianship is excellent throughout, not surprising considering the assocation with the legendary Capercaillie. However, this album isn't quite sure what it wants to be - the mix of musical styles leaves you unsure of what is going on here. Some tracks (e.g. Las Temporadas) are definitely coming from the "world music" scene typified by Peter Gabriel's "Passion", the Afro Celt sound system etc. Other tracks such as Millennium Girl would be best described as "acid country", country music, but not as we know it. "New Sardinia" owes an obvious debt to Capercaillie. "Ambient beach" is restful and calm.

This album is definitely on the "experimental" ... Read More:
