I wish that I had read BNW's review before I bought this (not through Amazon). I though I would be able to skip the narration, but this is impossible because it goes on over the music. It is so bad, I didn't bother to listen to the whole CD. I am not going to give it to my 6 year old neice. I do not want to hinder her growing appreciation of music. I will not give it to a charity shop. It would be unfair to unload my dissapointment onto someone else. The disk is in the bin.

My knowledge of classical music is not so advanced, but it is a breed of music you must learn to appreciate if you get what I mean. I am to keen to expand my knowledge of classical music, so buying this album is a great starting point. Classical music is a breed of music which existed long time ago and is really old fashioned, but a real pleasure to listen to. It is very much instrumental orientated. You can hear the piano, violin or the flute with their distinctive sounds in the background.

The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World is an excellent album featuring and honouring the talents of all the major acts to embrace their names in classical music combined in four CDs. Remember The Four Seasons, Fantasia, Concerto For ... Read More:

It's true that the narration style of Prunella Scales is cool and restrained, but that is entirely in keeping with the tone of her script. The music sparkles, and The Nutcracker is full of memorable tunes that children warm to. Can it hold up against all the competition for kids' attention at Christmas? I think it probably can.

This is an excellent CD to introduce young children to classical music generally , and ballet music in particular. If you are thinking of taking young children to see either of these ballets, then get this CD first and Brian Cant will tell the stories, and the orchestra will play the main themes.
Higly recomended and at a good low price.

Having listened to this CD dozens of times now, it keeps getting better. The piano playing is brilliant, the orchestral accompaniment up to the job.Sound quality on high-end hi-fi is a little below top-notch, but more than adequate. Fillers are also varied and interesting AND beautifully played. As the only (?) stereo recording, this is superb value from every perspective, and rates between 4 and 5 stars on every count.

I agree with another reviewer this is an excellent introduction to classical music for children. Each piece is preceded by a short narration which tells the story but does not interfere with the orchestra at all.I would recommend it to anyone about to take a youngster to see the ballet. If you are in doubt as to whether they will sit still, don't be. My seven year old grandaughter was enthralled. She loved every minute and I can't wait to take her to see "Nutcracker" - I've already got the naxos cd version.

Marco Polo has been doing a great job in reintroducing the sort of light music that aficianados of a certain age, such as me, thought would never be revived. It isn't surprising that a sampler CD from the catalogue has appeared at Naxos price. That said, this is rather a mixed bag. It's good to hear the old familiar tunes come tumbling out--the only one new to me was Sketch of a Dandy and I loved it instantly. And I have to admire the way that the overseas orchestras capture the English light music idiom so effectively. But the delightful Vanity Fair sounds much too thin, Roses of Picardy and the Tom Jones waltz really need their words and Marigold would have been far better left as a piano solo than worked up into such an overblown arrangement. ... World's Largest Symphony, at nearly two hours and involving vast musical forces; Havergal Brian's Symphony 1 is certainly long overdue for live broadcast performance/s. In the mean time, the reappearance of this pioneering recording at budget price means there's no excuse for not taking the plunge.

More than any of the half dozen other works by Brian, commonly available on CD, the Gothic illustrates why his neglect is such a mistake. The symphony is not without a couple of longueurs, but don't turn away for a moment, because just when you least expect it, Brian conjures music of such eloquence and beauty that there can be no doubt the man was touched by genius. Under those circumstances, the great music, of which there is a lot, strikes one ... Read More:
