The first thing i noticed about this recording was the clarity and beauty of the flute sound. It has been recorded very well, unlike the piano, which, for the most part sounds very reverby and unclear. For me, the balance between the flute and piano is not as good as it could be. It sounds as if they are performing in 2 entirely different accoustics. I bought this album to hear the Feld sonata and it is very musically performed here. The first movement is taken incredibly fast, perhaps too much so as the rhythm does sufer a little. The Taktakishivili sonata ws one that i did not know before and now believe it deserves more of a hearing. The third movement is particularly well played and contains a very memorable theme. Anybody who loves Mahler's music should consider buying this set at its amazingly low cost. If only something of similar quality and price had been available when I was at school in the 1960's and simply couldn't afford records of Mahler! No newcomer to Mahler's symphonies will be short-changed by this set and people who know the music well will be pleased by beautifully moulded interpretations, well played and clearly recorded. As another reviewer has mentioned, the percussion (especially drums and tam-tam) are extremely individual and, as he put it, "hair-raising". All to the good in hair-raising music like the Resurrection Symphony. The recording sound-level of this latter symphony is rather low, by the way, but if you turn up the volume ... Read More:

Anybody who loves Mahler's music should consider buying this set at its amazingly low cost. If only something of similar quality and price had been available when I was at school in the 1960's and simply couldn't afford records of Mahler! No newcomer to Mahler's symphonies will be short-changed by this set and people who know the music well will be pleased by beautifully moulded interpretations, well played and clearly recorded. On this, his only all-Gubaidulina release, old friend Rozhdestvensky conducts the Stimmen... Verstummen symphony dedicated to him and also acts as narrator in the other piece Stufen. The large-scale symphony completed in 1986 uses a full orchestra and, somewhat unusually for this composer, features major parts for all wind-instruments that are occasionally played using extended techniques. Less unusually there are also extensive parts for various percussion instruments including xylophones. Still the music sounds not at all crowded and is scored very transparently, which makes for a fascinating and very colourful atmosphere, especially in the fairytale-like movement that recurs throughout which I suppose makes this a symphonic work rather than ... Although it uses a religious text by Francis of Assisi celebrating God/Nature, the Canticle of the Sun sounds just as much like some ancient pagan ritual, I've seen it performed like that as well. It has quite a meditative feel at times but there's also a narrative going on. The lead voice performed by the cello continually engages the voices and percussion to join in, at first hesitantly but growing more confident, until some sort of crisis sets in where the cellist abandons his instrument to instead rally the troops using striking high shrieking sounds over a long-held celeste sound.
