As another reviewer has noted, Rimsky-Korsakov's works have been most unjustly neglected in the west - although there are several other recordings than these, which he seems unaware of, especially the superb Bolshoi versions of Snow Maiden and May Night, conducted by Fedoseyev in the 1970's in excellent sound. They are hard to find but Sokolik's Snegourotchka (Snow Maiden)is exquisite and both casts and conductor are to be preferred to these current Bulgarian sets, which are over bright in sound and rather cautiously conducted.

There is also another Golden Cockeral (Bolshoi, 1960's) but it is harshly recorded and this new Bulgarian performance is rather easier on the ears and has some very fine singing.

Commissioned for the millennium, this is a significant addition to the recording world. Using Orchestra, organ, soloists and part-choirs variously in counterpoint and singly, the whole work in all its 95 or so minutes leaves one with a profound feeling of having experienced something very rare, yet hard to define. The bass solo dominates the work in typically rich, and often sombre, Russian tones, the orchestration is frequently sparse yet conveys the composer's intentions beautifully, and the big percussion climaxes come over as essential rather than excessive.

Lovers of this genre must buy this CD to fill a major gap in their music collection, and if quick can also experience the work live at this year's Proms at the Albert Hall, ... Read More:

The first thing i noticed about this recording was the clarity and beauty of the flute sound. It has been recorded very well, unlike the piano, which, for the most part sounds very reverby and unclear. For me, the balance between the flute and piano is not as good as it could be. It sounds as if they are performing in 2 entirely different accoustics.

I bought this album to hear the Feld sonata and it is very musically performed here. The first movement is taken incredibly fast, perhaps too much so as the rhythm does sufer a little. The Taktakishivili sonata ws one that i did not know before and now believe it deserves more of a hearing. The third movement is particularly well played and contains a very memorable theme.
