I remember buying this on vinyl all those years ago and thinking WOW!! Forget the pop of 'Tainted Love' I musch preferred the darker Soft Cell - 'Youth', 'Frustration', 'Bedsitter', 'Entertain Me' and 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' were my favourites back then. This is an essential early '80s album.
One major gripe (althought it might seem minor!!) the Non-Stop Ecstatic version of 'Sex Dwarf' on Disc 1 has been edited by 3-4secs - it is missing the 'How was that?' ending. For some inexplicable reason this ending then appears at the end of the 'Memorabilia' extended version on Disc 2 - seemingly very sloppy of Some Bizarre that - unless it is just my version??

Having heard tracks on the myspace website, and also the 7 track promo (which includes a few dub versions) I wasn't sure whether to risk buying this, particularly as most of the remixes on the "Soft Cell/Marc Almond: Memorabilia" remix compilation were disappointing. However I found a cheap copy and to be honest for the purist there is only a single disc worth of decent mixes/interpretations, which is a bit of a shame as it's a long-awaited double!

Dance/trance fans will find little here to tickle their musical taste-buds, but for the open-minded there are some worthwhile revamps.

"Memorabilia", "Bedsitter", "Youth", "Torch" (albeit an edit),"Were The Heart Is", "Seedy Films" and "A Man Could Get Lost" are all strong entries on disc ... Read More:

one on the first albums i ever bought on vinyl! them where the days!

still sounds as fresh and dirty as it did then! it is an album for a teen on the wild side - today -as i was then!

its a masterpeice of sleaze, pop and love that anyone who has ever felt on the outside will adore!

the huge hits hide so many hidden gems - in fact every single track is amazing!

I completely concur with Jason's review of Soft Cell's difficult second album. If those seduced by Tainted Love were repulsed by some of the darkness on this album, they passed on an album which, even though it's slightly more uneven than Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, is still pretty good anyway.

Stand-out tracks? Where The Heart Is, Almond's autobiographical tale of a dysfunctional childhood, the opener Forever The Same and Loving You, Hating Me. The album shows Soft Cell broadening their sonic and creative palette a good deal and nothing really prepares you for Martin which is a pretty harrowing track. As for the Hendrix medley...well, I like to think they were taking the mick a bit but then they had a large appetite for that and
not showing 'respect'!

I couldn't afford the £70 plus box set of Soft Cell's singles I saw in 1990; so it is nice that they are collected on this screaming good value boxset. The Cell made some epic classics- and to capture the full versions, on something that isn't worn vinyl is splendid...Disc one offers the fall- Daniel Miller produced trash fantasy 'Memorabilia'- and it's b-side 'Persuasion', which picks up where the Human League's 'Life Kills' left off. Do I need to mention 'Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go'? The extended 'Bedsitter'captures the existential joy of nightime pleasures and pains; remember, it was a bigger hit in Spain than 'Tainted Love'. Its flip 'Facility Girls' is not as good (where is 'A Man Could Get Lost'?). 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' is probably the best pop song of all ... Read More:

This collection of early Soft Cell songs contains some absolute gems. I was aware of an EP and a track on a compilation, but until the release of this album I didn't know Dave Ball and Marc Almond had produced so much other early material. The sleeve notes describe the limited range of equipment used to produce the music in a studio at Leeds Polytechnic. With that in mind, it's remarkable how well produced the songs are.

Lyrically, the songs are close to those on Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, mostly dealing with isolation, loneliness and the monotony of everyday life. Musically, it is closer to Soft Cell's second "proper" album, The Art of Falling Apart, with harsh synth sounds.

Unlike most albums that repackage an artists very early material, this sounds ... Read More:

This is not as good as the earlier Soft Cell complitation the "Bedsit Tapes". It is a very short CD, only about 31 mins and that includes the unlisted "Tupperware Party" - which is also, as far as I can tell, the same version that is on the Bedsit Tapes.
However there are some nuggets here, there is a a comply different fast arrangement of "My Secret Life" - not as good as the track on "Non Stop Erotic Cabaret" - but it is interesting to hear how the song evolved. There is also a really good verson of "Say Hello" with Marc dueting with himself! Of the other titles "Frustration" is from the Mutant Momemnent EP which was stupidly was left off the earlier Bedsit Tapes and "As Advertised". This is a welcome addition to the Soft Cell song cannon I only knew it from a rough live tape of Futurama festival ... Read More:
