The new album by the best guitarist in the world bar none - you really need to know no more ! I heard Sonny Landreth by accident on "Last FM" and was so captivated that i rushed out and bought all of his albums that i could lay my hands on. Unfortunately because of the English mentality that was "none" at the time and I had to order from the USA. If you're coming to Sonny Landreth now you are luckier as these fine albums are now available in this country easily through Amazon. This is Mr Landreth's latest offering and a fine piece of work it is too. Most albums featuring "guest stars" can get a little tiresome as it can turn into a "spot who's playing what" exercise but this is a fabulous album where everything just blends together perfectly. ... I wondered to myself "How can Sonny Landreth possibly equal the resounding success of South of I-10?" but I needn't have worried. Levee Town consolidates his status as the supreme slide guitarist working today but also builds on and develops his quite considerable songwriting abilities. Many have spoken of the weakness of his vocals but his voice perfectly compliments the instrumental prowess and indeed, sets it off nicely. The tracks are beautifully worked and none more so than album highlights such as Deep South, Love and Glory, The USS Zydecoldsmobile and Broken Hearted Road though there is not a weak track among them. Having got this album having heard the first 2 albums by Sonny Landreth, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed. That's not to say that it's a bad album because it isn't but having heard what Sonny is capable of, as both a songwriter and a musician, I do feel a little cheated by this. First up is the production which is way too glossy for this type of music. Then there are the songs themselves, with none of them standing out particularly strongly ... there is a noticeable lack of memorable hooks on this outing. Then there is the playing itself, there just isn't the variety within it that I have come to know and expect from Sonny. I have to agree with Trevor. I also have most of Sonny Landreth's previous albums as well as albums by Beausoleil with whom he played for a while. He used to be one of the most original and inventive slide guitarists with a very distinctive style, but this record is not much more than a re-hash of some earlier stuff and the originality is very faded. When I saw him in London at a concert, I found it very disappointing that he had practically gone all the way to a heavy metal-like sound pumping up the volume to Motorhead levels. This offering lacks his old subtlety, which had been his strength. If you want to get the best example of Sonny's unique and heart-stopping cosmic slide sound (from his electric era), get "Outward Bound". There's nothing like it. Also, ... Read More:

OK, so Sonny Landreth doesn't have the strongest singing voice in rock - as some of his critics like to point out - but his singing is prefectly serviceable, the tunes are mostly strong and his slide guitar playing is outrageously brilliant. Listen to the guitar solo on 'Creole Angel' - no one else has ever made a guitar sound like that! Previous album 'Outward Bound' had even more dazzling guitar playing (maybe it was just the first time I had heard Landreth in his own right, rather than as John Hiatt's sideman) but this is a more than adequate follow-up. If you like slide guitar then you probably already own this: if you haven't heard Sonny Landreth yet you're missing out.

I was given this album by a friend about 6 years ago - he'd purchased it in the US but felt that it wasn't up to much as it was a little "lightweight for a blues album".........little did he know! Well, for me it's a brilliant album of contrasts and counterpoint and shows Sonny Landreth as one of the finest exponents of modern slide guitar playing, sounding at times like Bonnie Raitt on the slower material found here and, at other times, sounding like Johnny Winter on speed, such is this man's range! This album is simply beautiful in that it really is timeless, drawing on various facets of the blues and zydeco, country and folk but with a blend that is unique to Louisiana.
