I've never been one for the jazz themed white noise thrashouts so beloved of Mr Pierce, but always loved the droney cathedral rock of his earlier days (which I appreciate is just as unmusical to some ears - I absolutely love Pure Phase). Ladies and Gentlemen is undoubtedly his masterpiece (jazz themed white noise thrashouts notwithstanding), but why oh why did I not buy a second copy and keep the first fresh in its pill box?

Anyway, post L&G the work declined. Some decent stuff on Let it come down, but I didn't bother with Amazing Grace. This is a return to form. I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer who said he might need a bit more inspiration when it comes to song titles, but the songs and music are back. I cannot stop ... Read More:

When he wrote and recorded the first track on this album, Jason Pierce was touched by genius. It is stunningly beautiful and is the best thing he has ever written. The rest of the album is great but the title track is the one.

It is common parlance to go along with the time-honoured myth that the greatest of all English rock composers and songsmiths emerged from the the 1960s culminating in arguably their greates works in the latter half of the decade. I am thinking of people like Ray Davies, Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane. Whilst these songwriters and musicians have their moments of undoubted greatness, nobody can come close to the genius that is Jason Pierce.

Lazer Guided Melodies is simply one of the greatest pieces of music to have ever emerged from this country. It's genius lies in the fact that it skillfully combines free-form jazz, plaintiff melodies and songwriting craftsmanship utilizing a variety of percussion and strings. Songs flow almost seamlessly from ... Read More:

Music : Amazing Grace
Brought this on Friday just gone, and have not stopped listening to it. On first hearing, a little disjointed between the Garage and Gospel. Second listening the true beauty of the songs harsh and soft started to permeate out. Third listening, totally immersed, again.
Spiritulized and Pierce have consistently been the best band of the past decade and this album got me to dig out my copies of Pure Phase, Laser Guided Melodies, ...floating in space and Let It Come Down. Put together it is an incredible canon of music, individually evry album is a potent soundscape with incredible imagination
4 stars for the album
5 stars for the band.
Mr Spaceman, please don't ever come down.

It's not the same as laser guided melodies but then it doesn't need to be.I have all the spiritualized albums and it's probably a toss up between these two as their best album even though they are all good. You won't find better pop perfection than the track 'do it all over again'.This is an album i return to time after time. It's probably a little more accessable than laser guided melodies(which i also love, but a lot of friends find it dreary..)
Definetely a good album to try spiritualized out.And essential if you liked any of the other spiritualized albums. You won't be dissapointed.

Apologies in advance for sounding like an NME journo, but one of the things I love about this band is their almost classical approach. Jason Pierce has themes that run through his records, and this is particularly the case with Pure Phase.

It is music that is not in a hurry for anything, and the length of some of the tracks really gives him time to explore to explore his music.

Pure Phase is not really music at all - it's simply an electronic noise which is sort of the aural equivalent of watching Blue - can you see the background changing? Are there shapes in there? Is there stuff hidden inside the noise. This track leads into Spread Your Wings, which ends with strings to make your heart soar.

Not everyone's cup of tea, and overall, Ladies ... Read More:

Why is it with every new release everyone says 'Spiritualized have gone for a more stripped back sound with this album...'?

Someone is bound to be writing that right now about the forthcoming album that this single is taken from and will probably write the same about this too. The sentence immediatly after will refer to Jason's brush with death and make all sorts of connections too, I'm Sure. However, I'm not going to write about either of those things, on purpose. But I see why they will be written.

In a way, I think this single is a return to previous sounds-I think it sounds most like 'Lazer Guided' mixed with 'Stop you cryin'. However, the production is far closer to the mixing of 'Amazing Grace' (pleasingly so-the instruments seem to speak for themselves ... Read More:

Music : Complete Works Vol.2
i got into spiritualized at the ladies and gentlemen era. buying the complete works vol. 1 was def worth it as i didnt own most of the songs, and it was great. when i saw this one come out, i didnt get it, althouhg i wanted it, but i did wonder if the songs on it that said 'stop your crying' was just the same version as the others, cos the vol 1. has like 'glideas and chimes version' and '7" version' after the titles, whereas this didnt. now i own it, i can tell you that the songs are just the same songs, its like a best of the two album ladies and gentlemen and let it come downm spread over 2 discs (?...). anyway its worth it if its a fiver cos its got a bit of stuff thats not on albums, but whereas the last one (Vol 1.) had proper different versions and other interesting tracks, this ... No amount of over-orchestration can disguise the fact that these are dull songs by somebody who can't sing.
