What an extremely disappointing album. I loved here previous albums. Her beautiful voice and her take on some wonderful standards. This albums is full of what I call single notes songs. They are tuneless and without melody. Stacey's voice and the excellent musicianship of her backing group lift it just a little but are wasted on these bland and empty songs. None of them are memorable and even the well known "Hard Hearted Hanna" and "What A Wonderful World" do little to turn this into a CD worth playing again. Please, please Stacey, come back to songs with soul, melody and a tune.

I first heard her sing 'Hushabye Mountain' on the radio and thought wow, what a voice. Such pure crystal clear clarity. This is my favourite of her albums as it appears to be of most of the reviewers. You really do not have to like jazz to enjoy this album. Classic great songs performed by a classy singer.

This review is much belated, as I first became aware of Stacey Kent on the Michael Parkinson show, singing the title track of this CD, on it's release, in front of a big band.

It is no secret that Parky loves Big Bands, and this one was probably conducted by Laurie Holloway.

It was a surprise when I immediately bought the CD and discovered no Big Band, just the small group of (superlative) musicians that accompany her on all her recordings (since changed for Breakfast on the morning tram).

While I thoroughly enjoy all of Stacey Kent's CDs, I can't help but hanker for one CD, or even a couple of tracks, to be with a Big Band. I can't imagine why Mr Parkinson has not been able to persuade her to do it, even if it ... Read More:

Yet again the sensual tones of Miss Kent are let loose over a varied choice of her works, only this time in a much tighter compilation, her tone and pitch really are in a class of their own,she delivers this, the latest in a line of magical cd's,with as much,if not more, sensual expression. She really does make you feel as if she is singing just for you! In short,if you know her you'll love this,if you don't, try her and you'll be hooked.
Enjoy

Another one (Stacey Kent album ) to add to my collection.
I've heard Stacey Kent described in various ways most of which include comparisons to people like Billie, Ella and even Norah Jones (?).
I think the time has come for Ms Kent to be spoken of in her own right. She does not 'sound' like anyone else. She has a mellow distinctiveness all of her own with incredible vocal control and breathing.
How on earth is it possible in this day and age to see a Stacey Kent show, have a few drinks at the bar, get a bag of chips and the bus home, and still have change from £20 ?

If I have one complaint (not really relevant to this album) it is that the weakness in her band is her husband's sax playing. It's laboured, obvious and intrusive, ... Read More:

Quite simply, this album is perfect. Stacey has a lovely light voice which isnt at all intrusive, but has the ability to stop and make you listen. I bought this album for myself, listened to it and have now been buying it for other people.

If you are a fan of Stacey or Jim, this album is a must!

Stacey was born and raised in New York but moved to London and it was there that she embarked on a career as a jazz singer. Stacey is now a major name in British jazz and a new album release from her is always something to look forward to. Stacey claims Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Mildred Bailey among her influences, but her voice is more like Mildred's than the other two.

This debut album is a great showcase for Stacey's talents, with plenty of great covers of standards from the Great American Songbook, on which Stacey is backed by some of the finest musicians on the British jazz scene. Among the classics (mainly ballads) on this album are two Cole Porter songs (Dream dancing, It's de-lovely) and two co-written by Johnny Mercer (I'm old-fashioned, Day ... Read More:

I must admit that my initial reaction to Stacey Kent's music was indifference - although not quite as indifferent as the seriously over-rated Diana Krall !! However, having heard the title track a few times on the radio, it eventually dawned on me that this CD was actually great fun. Most of the music has the feel of the old Verve recordings of the 1950's where swing era musicians would record with more modern minded musicians such as Oscar Peterson.
The addition of the guitar to the line up gives some of the tracks some of that "swing era chug" whilst Kent's true artistry is demonstrated on the slow tracks such as "Isn't this a lovely day" (the best thing on the album) and "All by myself." Unlike many backing groups for singers, it is immediately clear that this is ... Read More:
