I once saw Stephen Duffy say something along the lines of, and I'll quote loosely, 'By now people must be beginning to realise I'm not doing this for the money any more but just because it's what I do'..

After being dropped by most, if not all, of the major record companies since the mid 1980s Stephen Duffy continues to plough his own path and release albums which should sell millions in an ideal world, but through some quirk of fate no one ever really hears about.

He really is one of the most diverse British artists, you just have to look at his back catalogue: 1980s electronica/pop under the names of TinTin and Dr Calculus MDMA, Nick Drake-esque folk with The Lilac Time, solo records encompassing ... Read More:

There's not really much to say here except this is a great timeless record full of songs that you will love to listen to again and again. When you marry great melodies to chrisp production, beautiful arrangements and intelligent, involving lyrics you can't go wrong really. There are more addictive hooks here than one record should legally be allowed to have.

If Robbie has any sense and wants a massive hit record (and frankly he needs one after Rudebox), he should just have a word with Mr Duffy and just cover this album so that these songs get the sort of audience they deserve. :-)

Honestly, buy this and do yourself and your ears and your spirits a favour!

I think that Stephen Duffy is an absolute genius and this is one of his greatest ever releases. Its funny though because i took a long time to come round to this records charms , constantly dipping into it but never quite "getting " it. These tend to be the ones you end up loving forever though and i think i can safely state that this will be the case here .

Traks 1 & 2 still dont move me but the middle of this album (roughly tracks 3 - 9 id say) are the heart of it , some truly beautiful and emotional songs which sparkle and delight with subtle elegance . Wonderfully sung , gorgeous acoustic settings ( I love that slide guitar !) , its a delicious listen . Once these songs get under your skin , believe me , they'll stay .
I'd also ... Read More:

Have been a fan of this band since their first album but have been a little disappointed by their last two records - like its predecessor Keep going Runout Groove is a tired-sounding record , only the slightly more uptempo tracks like Driving ,the excellent Aldermaston and the folky Parliament Hill fields are in the same league as previous gems from Paradise Circus or Astronauts - Until I kissed you I find unbearable to listen to ,the Western swing of No Direction might work on stage but here it is just a filler and some of the slower , more sombre songs sound a lot like songs from KG , in general I find the whole album is very short on tunes

At last! This truly great album has been re-released. People didn't get it first time round; but the combination of Duffy's outstanding songwriting and composing and Nigel Kennedy's (yes him!) extraordinarily diverse violin accompaniment is pure gold. Experimental in places (covering styles ranging from delicate pizzacato to Indian raga in the adjoining instrumental Transitoires), but never losing sight of melody, this album flows beautifully. And the songs...romantic, but not a cliche in sight, from a songwriter at the very pinnacle of his craft. Recent magazine reviewers of the album (Q, Mojo) have seen the light this time round. Those who bought it in 1993, have had a decade of pleasure. Those intrigued by Duffy's songwriting for Robbie Williams, should investigate ... Read More:
