I actually am addicted to this album. First heard it twenty years ago and loved it then, but time passed and I forgot about it. Bought it again on CD two years ago and I'm still addicted. There's rarely a day I'm not listening to it on my Pod. It's the perfect antidote to the mass of rubbish that's churned out every day on the radio. This is music that reconnects you to great songwriting, musicianship and, in some ways, to yourself.

It was the beginning of a new decade and, as Dickens wrote "it was best of times, it was the worst of times," CSN&Y has made it clear there would no more "Deja Vu"s and it was impossible not to be sad as having such stunning encounter of four songwriting talents stop their four-way magic at one single album.
And then there were four solo beauties -except for Young's "After the Gold Rush," first albums for Crosby, Nash and Stills- that returned a smile to many of our grieving faces.

Although if compared to his feuding amigos I would not rate Stephen Still first solo recording the best of all four, there's nothing here that could not be considered absolutely impeccable.
Furthermore, as musical breadth goes, this album show unequivocally Stills' ... Read More:

I have to thank Sid Smith in his Postcards From A Yellow Room blog, for pointing me in this direction. At the end of December, Sid reviewed his favourite albums released in 2007, and included Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape album. On the strength of Sid's earlier review I bought the CD and can report it is my favourite non-prog, non-jazz whatever, recording of 2007.

Steve Stills' Just Roll Tape has languished, apparently forgotten, in the can for nearly 40 years but thanks goodness it has been discovered, remastered and now available for purchase. So with hearing this for the first time and hindsight, I find this album reinforces three things in the late 60's (with Stills being between Buffalo Springfield and CSN),
a) Steve Stills was at a creative height, ... Read More:

Since the early 1970s, most of us have been waiting for Stephen Stills to release anything approaching the quality and consistency of his 1970 solo LP or the first Manassas album in 1972. The Columbia offerings were poor fare and his contributions with CN&Y generally unremarkable. So, having waited so long, I ordered "Man Alive" not really expecting much.

WOW! What a treat! Stills is back to his best.

And I mean that. For 35 years the "Love The One You're With" album has been one of my all-time favourites. Even so - in all that time - to me it tailed off after "Go Back Home": the second side (other than "Black Queen") always became just a bit formulaic. Similarly the fourth side of "Manassas" didn't really have the legs. Listening to "Man Alive" I suddenly ... Read More:

5.Stephen Stills II by: Stephen Stills

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Stephen Stills II
Sandwiched between his excellent first solo album 'Stephen Stills' and the career best 'Manassas', this second solo venture falls a little short by comparison. Whereas those albums sound and feel very cohesive, with barely a single average track on them, 'Stephen Stills 2' is a little patchy and unbalanced. Perhaps this is due to his restlessness and need to stretch out musicially but the result is uneven.

Things start well with a typically bright piece of Stills folk rock in 'Change Partners', charting the complex romances and relationships within the CSNY camp. Nice acoustic guitars and harmonies throughout that anticipate his collaborations with Chris Hillman in the future Manassas. 'Nothin' To Do But Today' is a very funky guitar workout with the kind of social/political ... Read More:

Here we have all the CBS songs from Steve Stills in the 70's.Too many people think Stills did nt make anything good after Manassas...Well,they are totally wrong! The first L.P "Stills" is certainly one of the best record he ever made, all the songs are soulful, lyrical with great arrangements. From blues to folk ,rock and soul, the man here is at his best!

Less interesting are the two others LP,but you can enjoy a few gems as "lowdown" ,"beaucoup yumbo and a greasy rocking "Not fade away"(just listen how the guy use the wha-wha stomp!)
But just for the pleasure to listen "Stills" remastered,it absolutely worth the purchase.

After all the dark, bizarre musings of the early 1970s, 'Long May You Run' sounds like Neil Young's holiday. All but one of his five songs here have a light, positive feel, while Stills' contributions tend to have a moodier feel. There's a fresh, seafaring feel to much of the album, what with four of the first five songs mentioning the ocean. The album's strongest point is the quality of the band that Stills and Young assembled. Three of the other four musicians contribute harmony backing vocals, including versatile Joe Walsh sideman, Joe Vitale. The addition of a second percussionist adds a lilting dimension to some of the songs, while Jerry Aiello's organ work frequently enhances the atmosphere, particularly on the sultry blues of 'Make Love To You'. Elsewhere, Young's spiritual 'Let It Shine' ... Read More:

This was always going to be a 3 or 4 star album because the first Manassas album was almost impossible to match, let alone better. The scope of that work was immense and I really believe it represented the best music Stills has ever produced - even better than the first CSN album. But don't let that put you off, because this is still a good album with some great songs and playing. Standouts are "Pensiamento", quite simply the best Latin rock song in his considerable cannon, the country-rock "Do You Remember The Americans?" and a couple of nice collaborations with Chris Hillman on "Isn't It About Time" and "So Many Times". With a band including Paul Harris, Al Perkins and Hillman, the musicianship is always going to be first rate but a couple of songs do let it down a tad, noteably "Business On The ... Read More:

Music : Right By You
This album was largely dismissed by both critics and fans at its initial release. This well remastered Rhino version gives a welcome chance to re-evaluate it. And in fact it's wellplayed, elegant and highly competent west coast AOR.

Guitar aficionados and Led Zeppelin fans should take notice of the fact that Jimmy Page plays on two tracks, delivering a blistering solo on the opening track, the beautiful latin-tinged "50/50".

There's also a tongue-in-cheek version of his old partner/friend/adversary
Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart".

Given that there has been no solo Stills music released since 1991's "Stills Alone", I guess we should be grateful for anything and thanks go to Raven for compiling this resume of his work with Columbia. Like so much about Stills, it's erratic with some great songs and arrangements and some real turkeys. It's just a shame that it doesn't include any rareties or live versions of songs that Stephen was playing at this time with The California Blues Band.

The good stuff mainly comes from the "Stills" album - his first with Atlantic. "Love Story" is a superbly constructed ballard showcasing what a talented arranger Stills could be. "Cold Cold World" is a moody, intense workout including some trademark wah wah guitar. "Turn Back The Pages" and "First Things First" are great examples of Stephen's ... Read More:
