Music : No Big Surprise: the Steve Goodman Anthology
In 1976 I was in a rush to get to work one Summer's morning when, on Radio 1, the DJ (may have been Noel Edmonds) played a track I loved. I didn't catch the title or the artist but assumed incorrectly it was "Some are pushing Mariuanja!". Well I kept an eye and ear out for this amazing song thinking it would surely be played on Radio 1 again. Only it never was. Then one day having heard Goodman through his John Prine connections I bought this album. And low and behold the holy grail I had longed to hear was on it! And well worth the wait too. This album is full of similar gems.

I listen to this disc more and more as the years pass. It has taken me a long time to realize just how brilliant an album it is. Goodman's song "City of New Orleans" is a classic, and his song "Yellow Coat" is a scorcher. And has anyone else besides me recognized Joan Baez doing background vocals (together with Kris Kristofferson) on "Donald & Lydia?" (They're credited as "The Silver-Tongued Devil" and "The Lady.")
