When I listen to Reich I continually think of contemporary songs that must have somehow have been inspired by his work. For this reason I believe that everyone and anyone will find something they love in this box.
This very affordable collection of works contains a huge amount of listening pleasure spanning the core of Reich's philosophy of music. Ranging from the early tape looping work of "Come out" through to his orchestral work of "The Desert Music."
Through every moment of listening to Phases you will be treated to what will feel like your own private lesson on the evolution of music in the 20th century and what we can only hope that it expands wider into. Enjoy!

When you hear this album, you cannot help but be taken in by its hypnotic building and sequencing of sounds upon and around one another. You also cannot help but notice how much an absolute myriad of artists that have emerged over the last 30 years are in debt to Reich.
From, as other reviews have stated, Eno to Aphex to almost any innovative electronic musician - parallels can be drawn to Reich. A lot of jazz fans will also find huge rewards here. The riffing on a theme that Reich works to perfection is the essence of jazz, be it more traditional work or more avant garde artists, such as Deathprod and Nils Petter Molvaer.
One point to note is that this album really opened up for me after I listened to it on headphones. I'd listened ... Read More:

This CD was given to me as a christmas present, but have only started listening to it recently. The first disc is the best with the chest burstingly beautiful "O mio babbino caro", but the second disk is heaving with relaxing hits. It really does do what it say's on the tin, the most relaxing CD on the market, the second being "Pure peace". I can only advise you to buy it now, if I am wrong you can resell it on amazon for almost it's purchase price and I am sure there will be many takers.

The two works on this disc are essential listening for anyone with even the slightest interest in Steve Reich. For those who don't know the composer, there are perhaps easier places to start - the Music for Mallet Instruments, Octet, Music for 18 Musicians, for instance.

It's now nearly 20 years since these pieces were recorded. Different Trains juxtaposes the Kronos Quartet with taped railway announcements, words overheard on trains, lines relating to train journeys etc. Throughout, there's a true integration of the form, since the strings pick up rhythmic and melodic lines from the spoken words, develop them, amplify them.

Electric Counterpoint is performed on an electric guitar. Pat Metheney plays against pre-recorded ... Read More:

I've said it before in other reviews of his recent work that I don't think Reich has written anything of high quality in recent years and I'm afraid it continues with this release.

I was at the premiere of Daniel Variations in London 2007 and despite some interesting moments I felt overall the work lacked something, this recording hasn't changed that opinion. I think the vocal writing really is the main problem here. It goes from the tuneless opening to the mundane and frankly cheesy 'My Name is Daniel' section. It is all just unmemorable and clumsy, the counter tenor sound is one I find particularly grating, then again vocal writing has never been one of Reich's strengths. 'The Cave' and 'Three Tales' are ample evidence of this.

Ooh I do like John Adams.
Steve Reisch seems to be taking the mick with his head-doing loops, and really doesn't deserve to be on this CD.
I liked some of his stuff when I first heard it, now it's annoying, and I skip over it every time.
Phil Glass can just about get away with it, but he's basically doing the same simplistic rubbish that Reisch does - just better, and more commercial.
David Heath surely knows how to poo on his own settee: what's he doing spoiling his piece with those grating "violin's doing rock guitar riffs" rubbish? If I could, i'd erase them out and leave the rest of the tune.

So in summary, the first five are great; "8 Lines" interrupts the mood, making you have to press the skip button; and the ... Read More:

This is one of the most sublime pieces of music I have ever heard. In the month that I've had it I've listened to it many, many times, and very little else. Whether driving, working or just chilling out - it always gives you something that very few pieces do.

That said, it won't be to everyone's tastes. The singularly unique style will inevitably bemuse as many people as it delights. It is not a mainstream piece of music, and so much better for that. My feeling is that it will appeal most to people who relish the subtle complexity that comes out of the interplay of simple elements, perhaps in particular those who are more analytically minded.

When you first listen to it you might be forgiven for thinking that 'nothing much really ... Read More:

I bought many of the Nonesuch recordings in this splendid set at a premium price as they were originally released, but having them together in a boxed set at this very attractive price was inevitable. New recordings of four works make the boxed set almost essential for a Reich enthusiast, and the rest of the set should make it equally tempting for a more casual listener.

At first, ten discs of Reich may look like nine too many, especially if your exposure to minimalism has been via the diminishing pleasures on offer from Philip Glass. In reality, however, there is a good deal of progress & variety across Reich's career, meaning that these discs span a number of rewarding works.

The early phase experiments are well represented, with ... Read More:
