What can you say about "Best of ..." albums that simply list the hits? Well, as "Best of" album's go, this is one of the best! Nine Police hits and another nine of Sting's as a soloist, all written by the main man himself.

One of the benefits of this format is that it allows you to revisit songs away from the context of the album in which they originally appeared. And so I was able to appreciate just how brilliant "Fields of Gold", "Brand New Day", "Desert Rose" and "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" really are: they are truly five-star songs. But the downside is that you also realise just how annoying is "Can't Stand Losing You".

But that's the only duff track in what is an excellent selection of songs.

Sting's greatest hits album for the period 1984-1994 has two new songs amongst the seventeen tracks, and four new versions of tracks already released on earlier albums. For this reason alone, this 76-minute album is one for the Sting fan who already has the previous four studio albums. Besides, it also means you can re-assess the songs out of context. I have reviewed most of the tracks elsewhere under the respective albums, so here I will just comment on the new and remixed songs.

The first new track is "When We Dance", a charming heartfelt love song with a steady beat - `When we dance, angels will run and hide their wings'. If this opens the show, the second new song closes it, a bland American AOR standard called "This Cowboy Song".

In his 2003 autobiography, 'Broken Music', Sting wrote, "That the band [The Police] would break up at the pinnacle of its career when our position seemed virtually unassailable, surprised everyone but me. I saw my own future very clearly outside of the band, because I wanted more freedom. ... I wanted to make music that wasn't tied to the limitations of a three-piece band, where I didn't have to compromise my own standards as a songwriter." 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles' was Sting's first attempt at achieving solo recognition in this way.

Sting's first album is an eclectic bag of decent songs with one outstanding gem. Intelligent lyrics rub shoulders with seasoned musicianship. He has an eye for pale landscapes - both internal and external - ... Read More:

Sting simply can't sing this stuff well..he sounds awful! This lute ego fest is a really annoying crock of self-indulgent ****! I guess Sting was too big a 'star' for the record company to tell go take a walk

Sting's second studio album overall does not live up to the strengths of his first, but has many glittering gems nonetheless. Its sun in its title largely reflects past and present glories rather than illuminates future vistas. There's no doubting the strengths of the supporting session artists, many of which were used on the previous album. But this is quite a self-indulgent album. Opportunities have been wasted, and the production is a little disappointing. But I do not want to appear too negative: this is a very good album, beating many of his contemporaries hands-down with its subtle arrangements and thoroughbred lyricism.

So what of the songs themselves? The least appealing to me are the opening track "The Lazarus Heart"; the reggae "History Will Teach ... Read More:

Sting's sixth studio CD is a big improvement on "Mercury Falling". The arrival of Kipper on the production side means this is certainly one of the best-produced albums in terms of its mix.

"After the Rain Has Fallen" has a standard rock chorus; but "Perfect Love Gone Wrong" has a female rap that interferes with the gentle jazz flow. "Fill Her Up" is a country & western/gospel hybrid that leaves me cold.

Far better is the philosophical love declared in the assured and well-written opening track, "A Thousand Years": "I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times | An endless turning stairway climbs | To a tower of souls". The electronic opening immediately declares this album to be different from all other previous ones. And in "Big Lie Small ... Read More:

The music of early Sting , and The Police , cannot be underrated in terms of the musicianship and influence that they have exerted on music as a whole . Nevertheless , this compilation is not extensive , nor does it attempt to be . The comparison of Sting's more jazzy solo offerings with the more rockier numbers of The Police ( ironic considering Andy Summers' jazz roots ) tends to leave the album between pillar and post in terms of it's musical direction . But , taking each song inividually , they are excellent pieces of composition .

Sting's seventh studio album (2003) is a welcome addition to the collection. Here, an unconventional conventionality holds sway. It is replete with excellent lyrics, often to do with the subject of love and personal relationships - an area where Sting excels in songwriting and singing. We have songs of angry love, hopeful love, spiritual love, dead love, bitter love, strange love, and love of life. Religion in a variety of modes also features heavily: Sacred Love indeed! It is produced again by Kipper and Sting, this album possessing a good upfront sound.

Three of the tracks I can take or leave: `Stolen Car' is too contrived, whilst the production behind `The Book of My Life' simply doesn't cut it, despite the cello and sitar and the lyrics betraying a love of life. (Sting's ... Read More:

I must admit that even if this album was represented in mono, it would still be rated five stars, if you ask me! This album is really a masterpiece and I recommend it to everyone who wants to step into the world of Sting's music.
From "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" at the begining, "Fields of Gold", "Seven Days", "It's Probably Me" (slightly different version than in the Lethal Weapon movie) and "Shape of my heart", almost every song is a candidate for my TOP100 songs ever. Very smooth album which you can listen to in almost every moment - being sad, lonely, happy, nervous, this album will always give you "that something" which will make you listen to it over and over again.
Since this is a DTS 5.1 record, I must refer to the quality of sound. Since I own a CD version of this ... Read More:

"If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one ... Nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could."

These lines are from this CD opening song, "Fragile", the concert having taken place on the evening of 9/11.

This is not just a live rehash of songs already recorded in the studio - although "Mad About You", "If you Love Somebody", and "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" (all very good songs) are - many have been re-arranged for this live recording. For example, "Fragile" is more upfront and immediate; the solo cello in "When We Dance" fits perfectly; and "Moon Over Bourbon Street" is more jazzy than the original. Some of the songs lose out due to the lack of a full accompaniment, so that "Fields Of Gold", for instance, lacks the lushness to mirror its title.
