I bought the vinyl reissue earlier this year and was amazed by the quality of the compositions and performance. The arrangements are top notch, going from sparse folk to full on pop-psychedelia (sometimes in the same song!). Dave Cousins' singing seems to really suit the songs which have a peculiar Englishness about them, perhaps more so than the later songs which The Strawbs are famous for. What i really admire about the album is that every track is different from the next. The strongest songs are "The Man Who called Himself Jesus", "Or Am I Dreaming", "Tell Me What You See In Me" and the epic 'The Battle', although every track is a winner. Fans of late sixties quirky Psychedelia/ Folk/ Pop will adore this album!!

This is a fine body of work which stands up alongside their most famous 1970s albums. Dave Cousins is still not afraid to tackle thorny subjects like terrorism. New World from the seventies covered the troubles in Northern Ireland whilst here, The Call To Action relates to matters further east.

If this album were released in 1975, it would be high up in the charts. Maybe it will be anyway!

This album has only been released officially in South Korea and it was very hard do get. It's now remastered with a exellent booklet written by Mark Powell. The sound quality is very good indeed and one wonders why it took so long to release one of the best albums by The Strawbs. All's well that ends well!

The album is a more striped down affair if you compare it to their first album. Tony Visconti's production give a more pastoral feeling than any other album made by the band, and it sounds a bit like Nick Drakes first album. There is no "stand out tracks" on the album, since all the songs, written mostly by Dave Cousins, is of highest standard, but if I have to pick a few favorites it will be "Another Day", "I Turned my Face ...", "Josephine" ... An absolutely fantastic buy for anyone who is or was into folk rock. One of, if not the best band in this genre, even Dave Cousin's voice fits in fantastically and the songs would not be the same without him. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant musicians - but what would you expect with the line ups that they have gone through - and I don't mean this in a bad way. All you need is a sultry afternoon, a hammock and a pint and you can lay back and listen to this and dream of those distant days when you chased your first love or picked up you first air-guitar...

You could argue this is a pretentious waffle of an album but I don't. I can honestly say I'm not a big fan of the Strawbs. I have only one other album of theirs [Bursting at the seams] but Grave New World was a revelation when I first heard it when it came out. So much so that I carefully copied the Strawbs logo complete with fruit and painted it on to my bedroom wall - my dad wasn't too chuffed!
I still play this regularly, whereas BATS gets played for "Part of the Union" and not much else.
GNW's outstanding opening piece - Benedictus - has always been special for me - no particularly esoteric or theological reason other than it's a great tune with wonderful lyrics and for me sums up how you live your life. The rest of the album has some smashing songs that ... Read More:

This was something of a transitional period for the Strawbs and represented their first studio album.

The feel is of a band not really together and struggling with its identity, unsure whether to tread the boards of pure folk music or to turn into a folk-rock band, which they thankfully went on to do very successfully.

Today the band perhaps value the songs from this album slightly more - as many are included in their current set. Dave Cousins is as dramatic as ever on Glimpse of Heaven and The Hangman and the Papist. It was a pre-cursor of better things to come and should be viewed and listened to as such. If you do that there is plenty of merit here.

I absolutely adore this album. It has to be one of my favourite albums of all time. Admittedly I only came to Strawbs in 1998 (when the first batch of remastered CDs hit the market) but I feel i've known this album for many more years.
Elegant, emotional and enlightening - I can't describe it any fairer than that. It is hard for me to pick any particular song here that stands out. They all do. Lady Fuschia, Tears & Pavan and The Winter & The Summer are all bursting (sorry for the pun) with feeling. I escape to a better place when playing this album.

I've bought this CD release because I have all of the A&M Strawbs re-issues on CD and this was the one which I thought would never see the light of day. When I bought it in 1975 or whenever it was on vinyl, I thought it was a clunker. It still is a clunker compared to the rest of the A&M catalogue but the passage of time has made me appreciate the fact that there are some tracks which are worth having - notably, 'So Shall Our Love Die?'; 'Hanging in The Gallery', 'Golden Salamander' and 'For Absent Friends'. The Lambert tracks 'Little Sleepy' and 'Back on the Farm' are really dreadful and barely worthy of being single B- sides. These tracks and Tokyo Rosie and Mind of My Own drag the record down and it never really recovers.

The whole package, from the sterile artwork to the lack ... Read More:

"Hero and Heroine" is considered by most fans to be the best album produced by the Strawbs. Certainly this album is a concerted group effort: keyboard player John Hawken provides the evocative "Heroine's Theme" that begins the opening "Autumn" suite, bassist Chas. Cronk teams with Cousins on "Midnight Sun," and while guitarist Dave Lambert's "Just Love" is the track that least fits the overall theme of the album, his "Hero's Theme" serves as a nice closing counterpart to the moody opening. Of course the prime tracks are those composed by Cousins, exemplified by the dramatic title track that may well surpass ""Down by the Sea" as the group's best work (pay attention to not just Hawken's organ work but what he does on the harpsichord) and the equally frenetic "Round and Round." For those who like Cousins ... Read More:
