It's 6th January and I'm going to play this one last time before I put the Christmas decorations away. Have played this again and again all through the holidays since it arrived.
It is perfect Christmas music, I think, even/especially if your have mixed feelings about the "festive season". The traditional carols are done in his kind of weird, jangly, sincere-but-cool, home-made kind of way (esp on the earlier cds), just beautiful. But nothing at all like carols sung by soaring-voices-of choristers, far from it!
The light hearted stuff is catchy and fun, but not in a tacky commercial way so you can surrender to the silliness of the season without feeling you're selling out, if you know what I mean.
I have two favourite tracks, ... Read More:

Its hard to say things about this album that haven't been said before, or that won't be immediately noticed upon listening to it. So what I want to concentrate on is the flow of the songs, the sheer artistic sense of musicality that Sufjan Stevens has. Each song leads effortlessly on to the next, and its a crazy mixture of half-minute muzak and 5 minute reminiscing, story-telling, faith clanging epics.
There is so much here to hear. I loves it.

Even though I usually stick to the coasts, I'll always have a place in my heart for Michigan -- I was born there, after all.

It also happens to be the first album in Sufjan Stevens' proposed fifty-state-album project, "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State." Stevens' mellow indie-folk rules the album with a gentle hand, from sprightly folkpop to banjo balladry -- and it's as fun as it is complex and alluring.

It opens with a gentle piano, joined in by a chorus of horns. "It's the same outside/Driving to the riverside/I pretend to cry/Even if I cried alone," Stevens murmurs, embodying a worker who isn't working. Despite its simplicity, it's packed with self-trickery and windy dissatisfaction. "I forgot the part/Use my ... Read More:

I love Michigan and Illinois so much that I didn't bother to research the comments people had made about Seven Swans before I bought it. This was a mistake. It lacks almost all of the orchestral appeal of the other two albums. Also, although I am fascinated by the complex religious symbolism and themes found in the other two albums I refered to, Seven Swans is too simplistic and overt in its 'songs of praise' style of contemporary Christian worship music. In sum, I won't stop buying Stevens' other (and future) work but I will more carefully vet them in advance.

The Avalanche may not display the theatricality of Illinoise, but I feel it has its own soundscape, (let's call it Crosby Stills Nash and Young with trumpets etc) and that is the reason for many of these outtakes/extras rather than any quality issue that might be inferred by the subtitle of this CD.

For me, the heart of the CD is sequence of tracks 7-10, songs that CSN&Y (and their various combinations) would have killed for. For example Springfield - despite its infamous guitar solo.

Later in this CD comes the upbeat and tuneful No Man's Land, featured in the movie Little Miss Sunshine, and the very touching (and personal?) Pittsfield.

If you liked Illinoise, don't hesitate to acquire another 76 minutes of this most vital of modern American ... Read More:

Music : Songs for Christmas
Sufjan Stevens can do no wrong it seems. It's been over a month since Christmas 2006 and still I can't stop playing these songs!

The 42 recordings here range from the Christmas standards that we all know ['Once in Royal David's City', 'Silent Night', 'I Saw Three Ships' and so on], to original compositions from Sufjan and old traditionals such as 'Amazing Grace' and 'Greensleeves'.

The five discs range from 2001 [pre-Michigan] to one recorded especially for this compilation in June 2006. It is fascinating to see Stevens's style develop, as he gradually embraces a fuller, more textured sound. There are several versions of 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel' and the exquisite German carol 'Lo! How a Rose E'er Blooming' where we can clearly see this progression.

Clearly an early opus and not necessarily a good place to start for Sufjan novices, but definitely a must for aficionados. You can see him finding his unique tone and voice, which already shines through on many of the songs. Super Sexy Woman alone is worth the money.

Yes, the well worn reviewer clichés are all here; with hints of Brian Eno, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, and more obviously, the bands on the Warp label all infusing the sound of this particular LP. I'd also cite the influence of Radiohead, whose year zero album Kid A had been released the year before this particular record and shares the similar aesthetic of an indie act dabbling in a genre that many felt they had no business tampering with. However, whereas Radiohead offered a nod to the music of Aphex Twin and Autechre while still retaining their own unique approach to song writing and structure, Stevens' does away with traditional song writing completely. As a result, some listeners will no doubt see the album as nothing more than shallow would-be genre-hoping from a self-indulgent poseur (just check the Amazon.com ... Read More:
