Music : Most Requested Songs
Susannah McCorkle's notes to this compilation are so good-humored, as is her general approach to interpreting the songs, that it's a shock to find out it was her last project before committing suicide. The choice of "For all we know" as the last track is a bit shiver-inducing. Having said that, this is a hugely enjoyable selection covering her entire career. Highlights are "Waters of March" delivered like a magic charm, "I thought about you" a real late-night feel with a perfect tenor solo from the great Frank Wess and a nicely arranged tribute to Chet Baker "Look for the silver lining." In fact, all the tracks are highlights, not a "best of" but a "most requested" like the ultimate Susannah McCorkle gig which, sadly, none of us will ever see. ... Read More:

Music : From Bessie to...
Susannah knew a lot about popular music, not just the Great American Songbook which are the mainstay of her recordings, but also songs of more recent origin.

Although this is not one of her thematic albums, it is yet another brilliant masterpiece, including covers of everything from Bessie Smith (My sweetie went away) and Ethel Waters (Thief in the night) to Paul Simon (Still crazy after all these years). Susannah also does great covers of That ole devil called love, a Billie Holliday classic, and The lady is a tramp.

Susannah was particularly good at putting her own interpretation on old classics. Her version of the Bing Crosby/Andrews sisters song Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive is given a completely different arrangement ... Read More:

Music : The Songs of Johnny Mercer
Susannah recorded this album while she was living in London in 1977. Although Susannah enjoyed life in the UK, it was made clear to her that this type of music was more popular in her native America, so she returned home soon afterwards. This was the right decision although another American singer of the Great American Songbook, Stacey Kent, has more recently become very successful using London as a base.

Susannah has recorded several albums featuring songs by particular composers. Johnny Mercer wrote many great songs for some of the best names in the business. Dinah Shore (Skylark, Blues in the night), Frank Sinatra (Talk to me baby, One for my baby) and Blossom Dearie (My new celebrity is you) were among the singers who were the first ... Read More:

5.Easy To Love - The Songs of Cole Porter by: Susannah McCorkle

Music : Easy To Love - The Songs of Cole Porter
Susannah established a reputation for singing songs from the Great American Songbook in her own way. This is never more evident than on this collection of songs written by Cole Porter. Of course, the first thing you notice is the song selection - a typical mix of famous and obscure. It would have been interesting to hear Susannah sing I get a kick out of you, to name one of many obvious songs not included, but instead we get Weren't we fools and Why don't we try staying home - two very obscure but delightful songs that I'd never heard before.

Many of the song will be familiar to you in some form. Night and day is a song that Susannah originally sang part of for a commercial. After it was shown on TV, people wanted to buy her version of the ... Read More:

Music : Hearts and Minds
When this album was released, we were not to know that this was to be Susannah's last set of new recordings. The pictures on the cover and inside suggest that Susannah was very happy with life, even if she had put on a lot of weight. No clues in the song selection either, which were mostly typical of the material that Susannah recorded, except Computer age, a witty song about modern life that she wrote herself. Yet, less than a year after the release of this album, Susannah committed suicide.

Aside from Computer age, there are a few songs from Susannah's traditional source, the Great American Songbook, but on this album there are many more contemporary songs than usual. The set begins with two popular oldies - I can dream can't I and Love is ... Read More:

Susannah established a reputation as a distinctive interpreter of the Great American Songbook and this is one of many albums that provide the evidence.

As ever, there is a mix of famous and obscure. The set opens with Guys and dolls, the rousing title song from the show of the same name - but with slightly different lyrics. Next, for a total contrast, is Once you've been in love, an outstanding ballad written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman with music by Michel Legrand. This is followed by a whole series of classic songs - Chica chica boom chic (generally associated with Carmen Miranda), My buddy (a number one hit in 1922 for Henry Burr), It's easy to remember (a number one hit in 1935 for Bing Crosby) and Don't fence me in (a number one hit in 1944 ... 8.No More Blues by: Susannah McCorkle

Music : No More Blues
Although Susannah had a lot of sadness in her life and ultimately committed suicide, the recording of this album appears to have happened during a happy period if the song selection is to be believed.

While Susannah has recorded several albums devoted to particular composers, this is one of her eclectic albums drawn from a variety of sources. Fascinating rhythm (a top ten hit for Cliff Edwards in 1925 and frequently covered in the years since then) is perhaps the most famous song here. One of two tracks composed by George and Ira Gershwin (the other is Who cares), it opens the album and sets the mood, although more up-tempo than most of the material here.

Among the other great songs here are Swing that music (Louis Armstrong), Do nothing ... Read More:

Music : From Broken Hearts to Blue Skies
Unlike some of Susannah's albums, this one has no particular theme but it opens with a cover of a Billie Holiday song (Laughing at life). Something to live for (despite its title, a very melancholy song) is followed by the much brighter Look for the silver lining. Next comes Nuages (a Django Reinhardt classic).

Caminhos cruzados is a Jobim song that Susannah sings here in its original language because she could not get permission to record a translated version. I wish I were in love again (a Rodgers and Hart classic) is followed by I ain't gonna pay no second fiddle (a cover of a Bessie Smith song), Losing had (a very early Ray Charles song) and I want to be a sideman (a contemporary song). Then comes another Jobim song in its original language, Insensatez, ... Read More:

Music : How Do You Keep the Music Playing
I bought this originally because I wanted her cover of Glen Campbell's hit By the time I get to Phoenix, which is quite different to the original. I enjoy both versions in their different ways. Two Irving Berlin classics, There's no business like show business and Cheek to cheek, are also given new interpretations by Susannah.

There are other classic songs from the Great American Songbook here too. They don't all get re-interpreted - Susannah's version of A fine romance is more or less standard, but maybe she realised that there was no way to improve on the original arrangement.

It took a while for this album to grow on me, because Susannah has a style all her own, but I eventually realised just how talented she was and bought all her original albums. ... Read More:
