I found her interpretation of the Sibelius violin concerto less than exciting. To be sure, she plays technically very well, but it all lacks intensity and her playing is overly lyric/romantic/sweet, which does not fit the piece at all IMO. The devilish intensity and despair that should be in the concerto at times is just not there. I can't comment on the Schoenberg - it is not to my taste (which is not Hahn's fault, to be sure, she probably produced the most accessible interpretation of this ugly beast!).

In short and simply this is the idea that underlying the multifarious forms of sensible things we are all fundamentally connected, and that music is one way, albeit a uniquely potent one, to reveal and renew this connection. The forms of music are important in themselves, but also substantially as messengers of this spiritual conection, and that is the key to understanding the diverse nature of the music here. If you have any sympathy with any of this then you're likely to be interested in this disc, and love it as I did, but it's also interesting as an unusualy adventurous release from a major record label. This 2 CD set of Choral works is very broad ranging, and would suit a concert-goer's taste well. It is as good as actually being there! The scope of work performed is from early Baroque to modern [ Benjamin Britain], and with some works accompanied by Organ, chamber and orchestral backing, as was intended. No disappointment, here-just a perfect evening's entertainment in the full sense. Performed to the highest perfection. Highly recommended both with regard to the performers, and the quality of the recording. [It rather reminds me of New College, Oxford, where I used to attend the Autumn Term 'Choral Season']. The recording times are CD1-75.03mins. and CD2-77.04 respectively, very good value indeed- for perfection!

It is not an easy listening experience (it never really is with Pettersson) but this work grips you from the beginning until the, unbearably moving, last sections (based on one of Pettersson's "Barefoot Songs"). Strongly recommended if you want a challenging but, ultimately, deeply moving score. The hauntingly beautiful last sections convey a real sense of finding peace after years of struggle and turmoil (Pettersson did not have an easy life). Excellent performances and recording. The alternative recording on Caprice (with the Suite from the Barefoot Songs) is also recommended.
