'Permission to Land' and the career of The Darkness shows us exactly what a great album can be and then what a super sized ego can do to destroy it. Permission to Land is one of those albums that came out of no-where and stormed the charts. It has great, simple, fun songs from start to finish and from the album opener 'Black Shuck' you know you are in for a good time. You get a good selection of tracks with a light hearted feel and a couple of the obligatory power ballads as well. Justin Hawkins unique voice made them stand out amidst the generic sounding bands at the time, but unfortunately it also means this album will sound dated and 'of it's time' very quickly. That aside, this album produces what it set out to achieve, lighted hearted, ... Read More:

Buy this album, turn out the lights, lay back, listen and let this music drift around you; enjoy the shapes and colours it creates behind your eyes. By the time the opening bars of track three have played out you will be thoroughly absorbed and transported to a place of fluid notes, chords and melodies that drift into each other.

There is originality here; it is an album of pleasant surprises; but there are enough respectful nods to keep things familiar. Some of the hooks will remind you of...well...something from your past. But it is never dull; it doesn't lack dynamism.

This is the perfect album to listen to of an evening with a good bottle of wine. It is my find of the decade so far.

When I bought this album, I kind of liked it,but something was missing.

I played it and whilst it was never off my player for a while, it soon made it's way onto the shelves, and was forgotten about as The Darkness' star rapidly fell.

I remember seeing the band on a kids morning TV show at the time of the first single release from this album, and they looked frankly dowdy, with Justin in a boring T Shirt and jeans.

Now I look back, and I realise that was was missing was the FUN element of the band.

Maybe they had taken to heart the comments as to whether or not they were true rockers or if they were just joking around with the music.

Maybe the incessant touring of the first album had got ... Read More:

Reviewing an album whose title you're scared of wrongly pronouncing is a daunting task but here I am listening to `Anathema' by Triple Darkness and writing some words about it. According to the wealth of all knowledge, Wikipedia, Anathema can mean any of a few things: "something lifted up as an offering to the gods", "banished" or "set apart". Any of those definitions could be the reason for the naming of this album.

It was whilst MC Cyrus Malachi was "banished" from society with what may have been just a dictionary and a book on ancient systems of religion, that he really sharpened his lyrical skills, leading eventually, post release, to the line up of him, Nasheron and M9 (aka Melanin9). - Triple Darkness.

The beats, provided entirely by Beat ... Read More:

This album is a stunning debut from latter-day heavy rockers The Darkness. Looking forward very much to the follow-up! Reason only 4 stars is that some of the songwriting seems to be aimed at american teen market, though "i believe..","get your hands off...""growing.." are brilliant songs up there with the best! hopefully more great songs like these will abound on next album. By the way the the vinyl version of "permission to land" is far superior to the cd: more spacious sound stage, less muddy, flat and "wall-of-sound"-ish. much more listenable.vinyl rules!
