The truth is, all of The Door's albums are worth owning and because each album was so different in style, it is important to purchase each one seperately to understand the true artistic diversity of the band. However in terms of packaging and tracklisting, this is the best compilation ever. The 40th anniversary remixes have noticible clarity over the previous CD releases, although it is disc 2 that sees some of the most noticable improvements. Love her madly and hello I love you are subtly different as are riders on on the storm and others although it is these former two that are superior through enchancement.

The running order on the first disc is little different from the previous best of, but disc 2 is nicely balanced with all ... Read More:

In January 1967, a band was let loose on the world from their base in California, mixing Psychedelia with Jazz; Blues with Poetry, onto a record buying public who must have heard nothing like it before. The band was of course The Doors, and their catapult was their self titled debut album, a thrilling record brought to you by the good people at Elektra Records. Nothing sums up the brilliance of this debut more then the three opening tracks, three songs which sum The Doors' whole career up perfectly.

The opener, Break on Through (To The Other Side), is more like a manifesto or a call to arms then your typical single that would make more commercial sense to be your debut opening track. What it is instead is Jim Morrison screaming ... Read More:

The simplistic history of pop music tends to see 1966/7 as the era of the creative battle between the Beatles and the Beach Boys. But 1967 also saw the release of two extraordinary albums by the Doors: THE DOORS and STRANGE DAYS. The debut album has overshadowed the second, largely because 'Light My Fire' was a superb single, covered many times by other artists, and the use of various tracks in retrospective Vietnam War films.

There's nothing quite as commercial as 'Light My Fire' in STRANGE DAYS, although there are plenty of catchy numbers. When I was a teenager, my way in to this album was via 'You're Lost, Little Girl', which is an attractive tune with a soaring jazz guitar solo in the middle. However, I've been listening to the CD intently ... Read More:

If you are a Doors fan you MUST buy this Boxset. The Remastering of the 6 Albums featuring Jim Morrison are incredible. I played these Remasters along with the original CD's I had and the difference between them is huge. I am usually cynical upon being greeted with an all new remastered tag but this time it is not hype. Loads of extras on the discs too. Amazing for under £50. BUY IT NOW......

The Doors' last album before Jim Morrison's death stands apart from their earlier releases. Grittier and bluesier, it isn't representative of what made them successful, but has its own aura. The cover shot shows a grizzlier, chunkier Morrison, no longer the budding sex god, and his vocal delivery is that of a more mature hell raiser. Two additional musicians on rhythm and bass guitars are also featured, so that Ray Manzarek's keyboards, though still prominent, are less dominant. The result is that the band sounds less different from other bands than before, but they also sound more fluid.

Blues forms the main thread to the album. There are three straight examples of the form, but there are, as usual, surprises. 'L'America' is the most uncomfortable listening and reveals ... Read More:

This is not my usual musical taste. I come across the track "Duck and Run" as a soundtrack to a youtube clip, showing the day to day ordeals of US soldiers in Iraq. I certainly do not regret buying the track's album for the quality of the other music is on a par.
Although certain songs like "Kryptonite" or "Loser" take a while to appreciate they reward the listener after a number of plays, reflecting the sombre mood of the album, where it seems life's problems overwhelm. I was surprised to learn this was a debut album as it does have mature, polished feel.

As a big fan of the doors, i was intrigued to hear of an early live recording. It's an interesting CD - with early and very different versions of The End and Light my Fire... and good to hear Jim Morrison's voice before he felt he had to yell his way through gigs.

But why were they playing so darn slow???? Back Door Man and When the Music's Over song sounds like a 45 played at 33, and with a couple of exceptions, the whole gig is bored and painfully drudgy. The excitement of the doors is in the intense delivery, and this performance was about as intense as a lethargic snail on lithium.

An interesting disc, but confirms that Doors performances could be patchy - particularly as this seems to be a compilation of more than one gig - surely they could fill a CD with ... Read More:
