I was lucky enough to see The Highwaymen live in when they came to the UK, probably not long after this show was recorded and the show I saw was very similar to the one they did on the DVD. I have always been a huge fan of Willie Nelson and also like the others, but when you see them together you cannot believe you have 4 huge country stars on the same stage, singing together!. The DVD brought back many memories of one of the best live shows I have seen - and I have been to loads. The rapport between the guys is obvious, and regardless of what Willie says about 'all of us having ego's the size of a bus' what cmes over is a fantasic group of country singers doing what they do best. There can be no doubt that the original coming-together of 'The Highwaymen' was an event that everyone should applaud and enjoy. Their first album was, I feel, their best, with its drama and darkness, but this album does try to run it a close second. If anything, it is rather more upbeat than their first, and there is still the same emphasis upon them sharing lead vocals or switching vocals between verses.

Track 1, 'The devil's right hand' is a rousing opener whereas the gentler, acoustic (almost 'folky') feel of the next track, 'Live forever', is an enjoyable contrast. Definitely more mellow than anything on their first album. The mandolin in that track and the piano and steel guitar in track ... Read More:

Waylon Jennings had already recorded one duet album with Johnny Cash and two with Willie Nelson, quite apart from various duets on other albums, so the teaming up of all three for this album was not a surprise, nor was the addition of Kris Kristofferson, since the other three had each recorded several of his songs. On this album (and the other two they later did), they mostly take turns at singing. If you're looking for harmony singing, you won't find much here.

As the title might suggest, the songs generally reflect on independent, free spirited people. They are mostly covers, drawn from a diverse selection of songwriters including Bob Seger (Against the wind), Woody Guthrie (Deportee), Steve Goodman and John Prine (The twentieth century ... Read More:
