This six-movement piece was commissioned by the quartet for Riley's 70th birthday. Looser and less austere than the minimalist pieces that originally made his reputation, "The Cusp Of Magic" includes not only western strings but vocals and pipa (a lute-like solo instrument) from Chinese female musician Wu Man.

The slightly sinister "Cusp of Magic" refers to the summer solstice and is soaked in world music influence, but other movements are more wide-ranging and whimsical. "Buddha's Bedroom" flirts with jazz, while "The Nursery" includes sampled musical boxes and rattles. "Royal Wedding" is in stern contrast, with its sober strings and an overlay of delicate embroidery from the pipa, evoking the weight of history and tradition. ... Read More:

This CD is wonderful! The range of material included is excellent, running from 11th century religious content to modern works written just a few years ago. The works are extremely varied, but the CD works on the common themes of music with a modal sound and of music of mourning (hence the subtitle "Ancient Tears"). The use of traditions and instruments from other cultures is refreshing, and the different styles serve to hold the listeners interest. The sounds and melodies grab the attention at once, but the intricacy of the music keeps you interested on subsequent listenings - keep an ear out in particular for the first musically coherent quarter tone playing I've ever heard (!), which crops up in track 6.

I hadn't heard of The Tiger Lillies till a friend told me I might like them. I looked on Amazon and saw that they had done an album based on Edward Gorey's stories and illustrations and as he is a favourite of mine I had to buy it. On first listen Martin Jaques voice is alarming, a mixture of Hinge and Bracket, Kate Bush and someone who has been or is being castrated. But it is absolutely spot on in so many ways, his voice really does get over perfectly the mood of the stories and the music is fantastic. I thought first that it would be one of those albums I get out every now and again, but I keep listening to it and loving it more. There are some friends I definitely wouldn't recommend it to, they would think it was the closest thing to hell ... Read More:

I'm a fan of John Adams, and was lucky enough to buy the boxed set when I saw it going for a song (sic). Most of the music is excellent, with some real gems, and only one dud. I'm currently listening to El Dorado, and had forgotten what a marvel it is. For me the stinker is "I was looking at the ceiling ...". That piece is more like a musical than an opera, and for me it fails completely and at times is embarrassing. I had the complete recording, and gave it away to a friend who liked it. The excerpts from Death of Klinghoffer and Nikon in China are both excellent. I also have the full version of Nikon and it is one of my favourite pieces of music. Adams's music is very American, having the open light feel that is present from Copeland onwards, marking ... Read More:

Kronos records are usually more conceptual or based on some artist work. Unlike the usual trend, this one is an interesting collection of pieces of world music, very well chosen by the way.
The second track (Verdes Anos) is a chamber music version of the portuguese guitar genius, Carlos Paredes.

To anyone who tells me that classical music is an "antique" medium, I show them the Kronos Quartet. I disagree slightly with yer man's other review here who suggests tghat this is a novelty record - of course it's not! it's brimming with blistering summer, salty fire and sharp lime spirits, fast paced stomping and life. Life, life it's so full of it it's exploding like good humoured fireworks.

I've never had such good fun listening to a quartet, and can you belive my viola playing mother bought this for me for my birthday. She really must have been thinking it was someone else!

This CD is a real joy. Buy it, and listen to it on a blistering summer's day.

When the orginal Dracula was released in 1931, sound was pretty new - a music soundtrack was just beyond the technology at the time. So, Bela Lugosi went to the big screen with no music.

Here, all these years later, Phillip Glass has written some music to go with that film.

The 1990's Dracula was very Hollywood - laid on thick, including Wojciech Kilar's (admittedly powerful) score.

Glass strips it right back - quite content to let the music sit in the background of a film that needed little accompaniment (it, and the orginal Nosferatu are both far, far scarier than their subsequent remakes).

The pieces are sparse and autumnal - very much like Ravel's string quartet pieces, although you hear Glass there. Unlike his more irritating ... Read More:

9.Feldman: Piano and String Quartet by: Kronos Quartet

Music : Feldman: Piano and String Quartet
When I asked earlier reviewers on the Amazon USA site of recordings of music by Morton Feldman, weirdears and Edward Wright, where I should start with the music of Morton Feldman, I asked if I should go for the monumental - five hours long - Second String Quartet. They steered me away from that and suggested others as being less daunting. I chose this one. I had only a vague notion of what the music of Feldman would be like. I knew that it tended to go on for a long time, that it was 'minimalistic' (although it's not like other minimalists like Reich, Glass or Riley), and that it tended to be subdued. All those things are true, I found, with this piece, the Piano and String Quartet. What I didn't realize was that it would be hypnotic and, to borrow weirdears' assessment, 'addictive.'
